HD DVD Collectors - What would you make your "Legacy" HD DVD Player?

I've got a reasonable collection of about 70 HD DVDs, which I'm not planning to part with. I currently have an D2 player, which outputs 1080i, which is what my 5-6 year-old RPTV can handle.

I'm wondering if I should squirrel another player away as a back-up, probably one with 1080p capabilities for my next TV. What would those of you in the same boat recommend as a Legacy player? And do you think its worth the effort of buying one now, or do you think players will be readily available on the secondary marketplace for many years to come?

All comments welcome...

I strongly suspect that when all is said and done, a dual-format Toshiba player will be available by the end of the year, making my A1 my legacy player.

If I see a firesale priced HD DVD player (60$ or less) then I'll consider a "back up" player. But I've never had a disc player fail on me (going back to 1985 for my first CD player--still working daily in my friend's living room system), so I'm not overly concerned.

Amazon has reduced the price of the A3 from $119 about three days ago to $109 yesterday to $99 today. I am very tempted to get a spare one as a back-up, but will wait a few days more.

If I can track down an A35 for under $200, I would likely make that my legacy player. I currently have an A30 that's less than a month old.

I saw an A35 for sale by one of the HTF reviewers in the for sale section. The A35 is also $205 at Amazon today.

I picked up an A3 for $99 this morning and I will probably pick up an A35 if I can find one for under $150 in the next few months.

The only problem with Amazon is they cannot ship electronics to Canada, so I can buy all the HD DVDs I want in the 50% off sale, but not a player with which to play them. Ironic, isn't it?

The A3 is only $79 at Costco and comes with 300 and The Bourne Identity.. not bad at all!

Shoot if Sam's offered the same deal, I'm in on Saturday.
I'll simply call it my legacy player and it will get used frequently.

Re: HD DVD Collectors - What would you make your "Legacy" HD DVD Player?

Interestingly enough, I read elsewhere that the 2nd gen had the advantage over the 3rd - hence a A20 is a better build than an A30.

My D2 (Costco's A2) outputs sound as 1.5 DTS, but I gather that a lot of players only output 640.

The A20 is $99 from newegg. How does that sound?

I just picked up a D3 (equivalent to the A3) at Sam's for $65, including Bourne Identity and 300, as well as an HDMI cable.
