Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Thanks for the OT help!

I found the shooting range last night, and my 5-yr daughter was egging me on: shoot him, daddy! shoot that one!! Throw another bomb and shoot them all!!!

Kinda scary....

I am so blown away by the Blu Ray....Blade Runner in DVD format looked like warm sludge compared to the BD version. there is easily as much improvement from DVD to BD as there was from VHS to DVD. Of course, the sound is limited by the optical connection, but it's not bad at all. Later, when I can get approval ( ha ha ) to spend a bit on a new receiver or better yet separates, I'll be in audio heaven. It's almost better to do it bit by bit, because you get the satisfaction of having a "new system" more often!

I fully understand why some folks didn't want a game machine in their pure setup, but it doesn't bother me so much. I think I will get the Blu remote, though!

I am having no luck with getting WMP 11 to serve the PS3. When I check the "share" box then click OK, nothing happens. The OK button goes gray, then comes back, and the dialog box never shuts. I may need an update on Windows.

Ah, the saga continues!

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I was just about to take the plunge and buy an 80 gig Playstation 3 to start enjoying the power of Blu but just heard the price is dropping to $399 in September. Since I only want it for playing Blu Ray discs and not for gaming (knowing that the revamped console will no longer be BC with Playstation 2), I am going to wait another two months. Kind of a bummer, but $100 saved means more movies to buy.

Regarding Media Sharing on the PS3 with WMP11. Make sure the PS3 is on when you are doing it. In that white box, once you enable sharing, an unknown device should pop in there. You have to manually select it and allow the device to share the media.

The reason the new "80GB PS3" will cost the same as a 40GB PS3 now is because it will be the same machine as a "40GB PS3", except with an 80GB drive. Too bad Sony didn't pick a 120GB etc. drive to prevent marketplace confusion (intended??), they cost less than a 40GB drive did a couple years ago. IOW, the 80GB PS3 available now is a different machine. I doubt anybody who truly needs disc space would buy less than 320GB...Sony made the HD very easy to replace.

So it's not really that the 80GB PS3 is coming down in price; the more accurate thing to say is "they are giving you 40GB more disc space on the cheapest PS3, for the same price", if we base it on what's available now.

Don't the 80 GB and 40 GB machines have other differences, like the number of USB ports?

That's correct though no idea if the new 80GB version will still have that diff. The current 40GB one only has 2 USB ports. Also, I forget now, but doesn't the current 80GB also have an SD card reader, which is missing from the 40GB one?

Anyway, yeah, if you really want more HDD space for downloads and such, you might well end up replacing the drive w/ something bigger anyway. When my 40GB drive got corrupted bad enough to not reformat in the PS3 (but not sure if it's truly dead), I just replaced it cheaply (and very easily) w/ a lower power consuming, cooler running 120GB drive from Western Digital. Probably shoulda just sprung for the 160GB for another $10 or so. Then again, if I ever actually get to the point where 120GB is not enough, I'm guessing 160GB would probably also not be enough either, and I'll just end up replacing the drive again at that point.

As I understand it from E3, the new 80GB PS3 will be the current 40GB model with a 80GB drive, as stated above. That means it will not have PS2 compatibility, no memory reader, 2 USB ports, no SACD playback. Basically, it's a PS3 videogame console and a Blu-ray disc player, two things that the PS3 does very, very well.

For just watching movies, does one need more than 2 USB ports or an SD Card reader?

Thanks. I'll wait for the $399 model to come out in September.
