The problems are not exclusive to a perticular model, consumers have reported that its been happening on all models. As you can see from this thread on the official Playstation forums, a lot of people have had problems.

It was pulled by Sony because it was bricking some units.

Does this mean you cannot restart the PS3 ?

Yes it does. However, it usually involves something that cannot be repaired by the end user - Like the firmware itself being hosed on the rom chip.

In the case of this update (2.4), the user can actually fix the problem by reformatting the HD and reinstalling as I have read.
