this year's crop of dual-format players will have little bearing on the format war.

I agree with this, but not for the reasons you put forth in terms of cost. I won't join the HD party, until I specifically can get a dual format player. I bet there are a lot of people who feel as I do. (In fact, I know this is the case because there are a lot of videophiles where I work, most of whom who are patiently waiting for one of HD DVD or Blu-ray to win, or for more affordable dual format players to come out.)
1st, the Samsung is due in the 4th qtr, well duh, it won't have much impact this year no matter how many of them they sell. Next year is a different story. 2nd, it's a Samsung. Yeah, yeah, I know lots of people who have had good experiences with products from them, but I know too many people who have had problems. Me, myself, and I am waiting for some of the heavyweights to offer players like this. Say from Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc.
Plus, as we all very well know, it's still way early in the game for dual format players. Just look at the extreme price drops recently for dedicated HD and BD players. That's just around the corner for dual format players as soon as more of them hit the market.
