Re: First Gen Toshiba 2.1 update available now

Getting it now via ethernet. Like the previous update, it's no speed demon at the downloading stage, but at least it's happening --only at about 30 percent after 10 minutes or so with a 3mbps connection.

UPDATE: Took about 30 minutes to finish. I don't see any new options in the menu system, and since my player has always worked without problem, I probably won't be seeing any performance improvements. The power up process took about 1 minute and disk startup--from disk-in to FBI warning--was about 70 seconds.

Congratulations to Toshiba for continually updating their players to correct known anomolies.

That really is great customer service.

I'll download over the weekend, but does anyone know what this is intended to fix?

Please Read before 2.1 Update

Hey you guys using the HDMI--->DVI connection be aware. Allot of users on the AVS forum are reporting that with the 2.1 upgrade they are now having problems getting any picture with this connection. If you are getting picture with 2.0 I would hold off. You can find the thread here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=829279

I would recommend another wait until Toshiba gets this right. I just thought I would post this before everyone jumped to it.

Re: First Gen Toshiba 2.1 update available now

Thanks, Sherard!

Indeed it seems to affect HDMI->DVI (with only occasional work-arounds).

The colour-space issue is reported by several posters to be solved, but at least one poster who already had (relatively minor) problems with Children of Men before, cannot play that disc at all now after upgrading to FW2.1.

Robert Zohn already offered to contact Toshiba.

For the record: many posters (not using a HDMI->DVI cable) report upgrading without problems and being happy with the result.

Sherard, perhaps it's a good idea to post your warning in the "sticky" (X)A1-firmware-upgrade thread as well!

Re: First Gen Toshiba 2.1 update available now

I just ordered the disk from Toshiba and I am using HDMI to DVI on my TV.

Guess I will put off using the upgrade until we here a bit more about whether the upgrade is causing HDMI - DVI issues.

I am curious to see what (if anything) is improved int he pciture quality. Personally, I think it looks wicked right now but I have noticed a few issues with deep black.

Any idea if the upgrade deals with the HDMI error issues (I get an HDMI error on the HD A1 when I leave the player on but switch to another source on the TV - like if I want to pause the HD A1 and check the score on a football game). Everytime there is an HDMI error, i have to turn the HD A1 off and on again and we all know that is a rather time consuming endeavor!

Dave,
What you are seeing is HDMI handshaking error, its normal and happens when the player no longer sees the HDMI path, from player to Display. I dont suppose they will fix this due to what maybe intended for copy protection.

SherardP

Well that is a real shame. The HDMI error is my biggest complaint with the player. It is really annoying to have to a hard re boot and a restart just because you want to view another source for a few minutes. Very annoying.

You would think they could come up with a better way to curb pirating than to sabotage their own machine.

Re: First Gen Toshiba 2.1 update available now

The 2.1 update seems to have fixed stuttering and little glitches that I had on my A1 with some titles (Children of Men and NIN: Beside you in Time come to mind) and with 2.0 there was a specific spot in Happy Feet at around 28:50 where the player would hard lock and I'd have to reboot... 2.1 fixed this as well (though it still glitches at that spot...better than a freeze though...rest of the movie plays flawlessly).

I am using HDMI to HDMI with analog outs for audio. Everything else seems to be the same (load times etc).
