Re: Received my HD2A 3/28/07
I belive our xx831 sets do not pass 5.1 on the optical out. Could be wrong, though.

Re: Received my HD2A 3/28/07
You also need a DTS-capable receiver if you want discrete 5.1 via optical.

They did away with the digital optical on the HD2A. Until Denon comes out with a new receiver in July 07, I'm going to have to keep it hooked up this way. Anyway, the unit did not load a rented Batman Begins HDDVD. I turned it off and tried again. It loaded, and the picture was great. It started freezing up mid way through the movie.. had skipping problems. I remved the disk and found it was thrashed on the data side. Another Blockbuster rental bites the dust. I played a standard DVD and it was excellent, much nicer than my existing DVD player. The remote is very difficult to read with no back lighting, but I'm half bilind anyway. Not a bad unit for $256.00 delivered. I just want to figure out the audio.. I want 5.1 Dolby.

Run HDMI to the set, and digital optical direct from the player to your receiver. All audio on HD DVD discs will be output by the player as high bitrate DTS over that connection but regular dvd will output whatever format you select in the disc menu.

I prefer not to push the subwoofers until they\'re properly run in.

Re: Received my HD2A 3/28/07
Wow.. the price dropped. I paid $356.00 they are now $349.00 with free shipping. I bought mine on line at electronics-expo.com for the $356.00 price, but you will see they went down.

Re: Received my HD2A 3/28/07
Thanks... I did just that. The only thing I had to do besides that is to configure the optical imput on the Denon receiver to read from the DVD. After that, it was a world of difference.
Thanks.

Yes, but I can't post a URL. If you add the 3 Ws in front of electronics-expo and then add the dot com after it, you will see that they are actually cheaper than what I paid now. Add the 5 free movies from Toshiba and it really brings the price down.

Oh, so you were factoring in the value of the four free HD-DVD titles that you can send off for?

Re: Received my HD2A 3/28/07
I think he just mistyped it as $256 in his first post since he said in a later post he got it for $356 which seems much more realistic.
I guess if you were to figure in the costs of the DVD's, its still a good deal at Value Electronics for $399 with 2 free movies from them (plus the Toshiba ones) and Circuit City, starting tomorrow, is giving 4 free movies instantly (plus the 5 on the rebate I presume) for $399. Toshiba is definitely making a push.
