why is bluray a success, when HD DVD can do more?
HD DVD can do the IME and bluray can hardly do the java stuff.. I guess people don't care about that.. I must say if you are going to spend some money on a bluray player.. you would want it to be able to play everything that the disc has? I heard some players could not do the java bl-j thing.. including the movie the guardian with kevin costner. the Q&A would not work.
the HD DVD can play the movie, do the extras and also do IME.. a visual commentary.. I know it might not seem much.. I would like to be able to pay for everything that I can get.. not a first generation player that cann;t do anything like that.
I keep hearing delays about the blj thing.. even some warner bros titles like v for vendetta, batman begins..

Blu-ray's chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... it's two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... it's *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... it's *four*...no... *Amongst* it's weapons.... Amongst Blu-ray's weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.

P.S.: Blu-ray survives (in my environment, as well as others) because of its movie content, not necessarily because of the promised technology. Since I can't play Casino Royale on my HD DVD players, I also have Blu-ray players.

Studio exclusivity and the PS3 effect. That's basically it.

I think a lot of BluRay's success has to do with 2 key factors, #1 the format has more studio support than HD DVD and #2 everyone that bought Sony's PlayStation 3 needed a way of justifying their $600 investment. Without any games really worth playing on the system at the moment, PS3 owners turned towards movies on BluRay to get some use out of the system until the good games arrive.
Since I can not consciously support Sony, I bought a Wii, an XBox 360 and a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player.

I think Blu-Ray has a much stronger marketing push that HD DVD does also.

How can you say that, HD-DVD is making a big marketing push with the 5 free dvd offer, plus the USA today ads they are running and the lowering of their players, regardless which format wins they will not leave the consumer out in the cold. But for my money if you want the best picture possible and sound out today HD-DVD blows Blu-gay out of the water...

Two primary reasons:
Content.
Choice of CE Manufacturer.
It's the reason I have a blu-ray player.
Personally, I don't like extras and interactivity features. So, the non-functioning PiP does not bother me.
I buy a film to watch the movie, not to go behind the scenes or play cutsie trivia games. I've got hundreds of hours of special features in my SD DVD collection that have never been played.

As said before...

and PS3 which consumers were fooled into buying..... I mean why else would Sony release a next gen game console without any games to support it?
Where Blu will have it's biggest issue will be when they make blu owners obsolete this Summer. That is the date that new Blu players must comply with the newest level of BD-J which all the older players will never be able to comply with...
It will be interesting when PIRATES and CARS is released with all these new software features.... Most Blu players will choke.... including mine!

I just mean in terms of making the general public aware of the existence of the format. Walk into most B&M stores and you will see plenty of Blu-Ray stands and displays, and nada from HD-DVD. This is due to Sony paying for advertising and marketing in stores, and Toshiba not.
BTW, I own HD DVD and not Blu Ray for exactly the reasons that the Original Poster stated. I would like to see more of a market presence from HD DVD though.
