In the long run, off brand manufactures will play an important part in HD media adoption, but not at this point in time...

I agree, I generally would not want to ever buy an off brand player. But since Toshiba is the only manfucturer so far, and I want to get into the HD disc market...but can't afford $500 right now...guess what, you have an enthusiast who is willing to put aside his traditional requirements in a piece of av equipment and pick up a cheepo player to pass the time.
I also think that you are underestimating how much a $200 HD DVD player will have on the market. This will be a huge boost for the HDDVD side, regardless of how the Venturer player is used and if it is even hooked up to an HD display.
I mean look at it this way, there are millions of PS3's in households right now, but I wager only a minor percent of them are primarily used as a BD player and the owner aren't buying BD titles like crazy.
But you put a cheepo HDDVD player in a couple of million homes...guess what, HDDVD disc sales go up.
It's a smart move by Toshiba/Venturer.
