Question about the HD-A2

I am planning on purchasing the A2 from value electronics., my question relates to audio. I have an older Yamaha receiver about 6 years the RXV-2090 can I still get the full uncompressed audio by using the optical cable or do i need to use the 5.1 outputs on the receiver and wire it to the back of the a-2? As far as HDMI my reeceiver is before that time so I will just use the hdmi for the video feature and not the audio. I used to buy DTS laserdiscs back in the day and miss the full bitrate! will I be able to accomplish this with what I have or do I have to buy a new receiver to enjoy dolby hd and dts hd?

Thanks for answering my post

Re: Question about the HD-A2

Hey Michael,

First, welcome to the forum.

I don't think the toslink or coaxial digital inputs can do the uncompressed audio. Just can't handle the bandwith. You will still be getting high quality but lossy soundtrack in Dolby Digital or DTS. It's a higher bitrate than standard dvd but you won't be able to benefit from HD DVD's advanced audio codecs without your reciever having HMDI or your player having analogue outs...which the A2 does not.

I hope that answers your question. There are other members much smarter than I on this tech stuff and I'm sure someone will drop in and help too.

Re: Question about the HD-A2

The A2 has no 5.1 outputs (I think the XA2 does), so that's out. Full 5.1 "uncompressed" audio (i.e. TrueHD) is only available via HDMI. However, if your receiver supports DTS, you can get a downsampled DTS 5.1 bitstream via optical. If the receiver can't decode DTS, your only option is two-channel audio, either via the analog outs or PCM over optical.

Re: Question about the HD-A2

Thanks for the tips guys, I think now I am leaning toward the samsung player for the price also I dont have a 1080p TV so no need to splurge for the top player in the sony. I was talking to a guy at tweeter last night and he said that if I uses the 5.1 outputs on my receiver and run them to the samsung inputs I will get the full uncompressed sound for the DTS HD or Dolby HD decoders since the samsung has those built in.

I hope he is right.

He's wrong.

They Samsung doesn't have the decoders. The Samsung Blu Ray player only does PCM lossless, not True HD or DTS HD.

Also keep in mind it's a Blu Ray player and NOT an HD DVD player which you started the thread asking about. They are different formats.
