Am I seeing 1080 with my PS3 and Toshiba 42H81?

I have my PS3 attached through the progressive component input on my Toshiba 42H81, using the Sony conversion cable set. The PS3 is set to Component and 1080i. Am I really seeing 1080 when I view my Blu-Ray discs? (Remember, this set is too old to have HDMI.) Thanks.

Pop in a Sony BRD, enter '7' '7' '6' '9' 'Enter' using the remote control and study the calibration screens.

...on the PS3 remote? Each number I press says "This operation is not available here."

I wish those Toshiba RPTVs had a way to display the current signal. I have a 65H83 and I'd love a way to tell when I'm seeing 1080i vs. 720p vs. 480p

But yes, you should be seeing 1080i with that set. The PS3 will output BDs at 1080i if you have that option selected. One way to tell with the PS3 is when you hit the "display" button. the text is much smaller in 1080i vs. the 480p display.

Thanks, all. It looks good. I'm certain with HDMI on my in-law's Sony KDF-E50A10, I would see a little bit better 1080, right?

if you have all your setting correct on the PS3, you are good to go. I have a 57H81 and it looks gorgeous!

Re: Am I seeing 1080 with my PS3 and Toshiba 42H81?

If it's a CRT television you need 9" guns to get anywhere near 1920x1080 resolution. Most rear projection TV's use 7" guns.

In actual resolvable detail you probably are closer to 720p even with a 1080i signal.

Time to go digital. If the panel has a full 1920x1080 grid then you'll get the full signal (also, if it accepts a 1080p signal, then that's also needed). Then you have to look at black levels, contrast levels, color accuracy, noise, etc. etc. like every other set.
