Toshiba goes below $400 in retail for HD DVD

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/toshibag...forhd-dvd/4365

Quote:
Toshiba HD-DVD A2: $399 (Before: $499)
Toshiba HD-DVD A20: $499 (Before: $599)
Toshiba HD-DVD XA2: $799 (Already effective) (Before: $999)

Already seeing low prices (even at $560 shipped) for the top of line XA2 player. Pretty cool...

Boy. If I were not as happy as I am with my XA2, I might be a little upset. Looks like a pre-emptive strick from Toshiba to try and counter Sony's 600.00 second gen player thats coming out soon.

Now, if they would only drop another 100.00 off the prices...

I am beginning to think that all players (with maybe the exception of the Pioneer Elite) will all be priced in the 500.00 range soon. From a consumer point of view, very good news no matter what side you support.

  • Toshiba HD-XA2, HD Add-on, Panasonic DMP-BD10A
  • Pioneer VSX-94TXH, Panasonic PT-AE 2000U 1080p (delivered but not mounted yet)
  • 252 HD DVDs, 65 BD DVDs, and over 1560 - SD DVDs and going down
  • New buying strategy - I will continue to buy Universal and Paramount HD DVD's, but if it available in both formats, Blu-ray now gets my purchase.

And the higher priced Pioneer Elite as well as Sony's BD player cannot play cds?

Competition alone will force Pioneer to drop their price or release a much less expensive player for BD & HD DVD.

I certainly could see Pioneer release a BD product under the standard Pioneer badge, but the Elite series has always carried a price tag 2 to 3 time higher than Pioneer's feature equivalent standard product. People that normally buy the Elite line (I am one ) will not bulk at the price.

Good point. I own a 1998 Elite THX Ultra reciever that still packs plenty of punch. No HDMI of course...but does have multi channel input for my HD DVD analogue outs.

My guess is this fall we'll see a reg Pioneer Blu-ray player...especially since Sony is dropping their price on their top of the line model.

Has anyone else noticed that the Toshiba HD-A2's price has been dropping all week on Amazon? $339 now, I wonder if we will see $299 next week.

It does seem to keep lowering a bit. This is very good news for those on the fence about joining in. I'm seriously thinking about getting my parents one of these.
