Newbie questions re: HD sound???....

I am looking at getting into HD. But, have been hearing about all of these different types of sound...Dolby Truehd, DTS HD. Then terms like "lossless". Can someone explain the differences and what kind of reciever am I going to need? ie-inputs & outputs for best performance?

Thanks!!!

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

Explaining all the differences between these formats is a big job. You might do an Internet search to find the answers. (I'm not trying to be rude or dismissive; but you'll probably find clearer and more complete explanations than I could provide.)

As far as receiver or preamps are concerned, you either need 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs (and a hi-def disc player with those analog outputs), or a unit that accepts audio signals on its HDMI inputs (which are relatively few models at this point). Note that most units with HDMI video switching do not accept audio on those HDMI inputs.
