PS3 20GB Version Availability

Jan. 9:
Purchased a PS3 20GB @ Target. Took it home and discovered it was a return. Called and talked to them and told them I would keep the one I had until they got me a *new* one. They would call when they found one.

Feb. 3:
After 3.5 weeks no call so I return to Target and discuss the situation with them. They say the 20GB version is very rare. One of the guys says that Sony is 'discontinuing' the 20GB. I re-state that I want a 20GB and they say they will find me one and call.

Haven't heard from them.

I don't think the discontinuing thing is true but I've read some stuff the last couple of days that sounds like the 20GB is about as rare as a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest.

I would prefer the 20GB primarily for the lower price but if it's going to take no telling how long I'll just pony up and get a 60GB. I'm wanting to get on with my life at this point.

So what's up with the 20GB?

Not entirely sure about it being discontinued but you can get it at Gamestop.com. They've had them in stock for a while.

Does the unit work okay? If so why not go back and get them too give you a discount and tell them you'll keep it.

I had the same problem. I was told they had a large amount of defective drives on the 20GB model but I don't whether or not that is true. I eventually caved and got the 60GB.

Re: PS3 20GB Version Availability

I have no idea if Sony is discontinuing the 20 GB but it seems unlikely and nonsensical to me. They want to sell as many games as possible and having a cheaper system on the market would help sell more games to people who can't/won't drop $600 on a toy. Once again, that's just my arm chair look at their sales.

The problem with selling the 20GB is the amount of money they are losing with each unit sold. The only difference between the 60gb and 20gb is the Wireless and HD so if they sell a lot more 20gb units, they will lose a lot more and will have to sell that much more software to compensate.

Does anyone know of a way I could match the 10% off I got at Target?

It works fine. As much as I've used it (every day I believe) I've only had 2 minor glitches. The one I have is scratched up a little and it's got some guy named Tim's weird ass music on it and game saves. I'd rather start fresh.

The reality is though at $500 or $600, most people are opting to just get the $600 60G version. Originally I thought the 20G would be fine, but I went with the 60G as well and I don't have any regret about that.

Re: PS3 20GB Version Availability

On the 20th I talked to the Target guy and told him I would go with the 60 if that came in first.

He just called and said they just got in 10 60s.

It was getting really frustrating as the last two weekends Best Buy had the 60 in stock.

Finally! Hot damn! This is like Christmas.
