I have toshiba hda2 connected to marantz sr5001 via hdmi. When playing a high def disk the receiver says either multi ch stereo or neo 6 which are two channel signals. All other formats I try to set it says incompatable format. I don't have this problem when playing a standard dvd. The receiver picks up dolby dig ect. Both the receiver and dvd player are set to auto.

I am not sure what player you are using. On the PS3, you need to change the audio output to linear PCM from bitstream to get the 5.1 PCM audio (uncompressed)

I have the Marantz SR4001.
