Study: Consumers Prefer HD DVD Over Blu-Ray

Study: Consumers Prefer HD DVD Over Blu-Ray

An analysis of online discussions on next generation DVD formats HD DVD and Blu-Ray gives the early edge to HD DVD. Cited as reasons are the lack of consumer trust in Sony, as well as gamer displeasure with selling Blu-ray in association with PlayStation 3.

Cymfony, a market influence analytics company, issued a Consumer Opinion and Trends report, "A Blue Christmas for Blu-ray," examining consumer market perception of next-generation high-definition video platforms HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

According to the study, positive discussions about HD DVD are 46% higher than Blu-ray, with over twice as many post authors stating being "impressed with HD DVD" versus "impressed with Blu-ray". Negative Blu-ray conversation indicates lack of consumer trust in Sony, as well as gamer displeasure with selling Blu-ray in association with PlayStation 3, according to the research.

I'd have to say "lack of consumer trust in Sony" is a big one for me. After the whole CD rootkit thing, I shiver at the thought of BD+. Of course, YMMV!

...Add to that the fact that you can get an hd-dvd drive for the xbox 360 at 200$.....that was a huge selling point for me. It's nice that with xbox they give you the option whereas sony forces you to get blu-ray with their console wether you want it or not.

You're paying as much for the XBox 360 + HD-DVD add-on as you are for a PS3. The XBox has absolutely zero price advantage as a high-def disc player if you're wading into the pool for the first time.

That study's just as unscientific as the anecdotal nature of the discussions (such as those right here on HTF) it is purportedly measuring. There is no way it can separate the effect of biased posters that pop into and hijack those threads it is measuring.

That said, I do find it interesting regarding how much of the study focuses on Sony.

But there's a huge advantage if you've interested in gaming as well. I'm not a MS fanboy. Hell, I own all three current consoles. The Xbox is hands down the better gaming system at the moment. I believe it will continue to be until well in to next year.

The main reason it's the better gaming system at the moment is the fact that you can actually BUY one.

You're right, IF you're wading into the console and HD pool for the first time. But for the 6 million people who already have a 360, that's a sunk cost. So for those people, it really is a choice between $199 for HD-DVD or $499 for Blu-ray (if you can even find a PS3).

I've got a 360, but I'm still waiting this war out. I don't care who wins as long as SOMEBODY wins and soon.

You may be waiting quite awhile. I don't see either side throwing a knockout punch anytime soon. I have a gut feeling it may be a long fight. Therefore, I'm biting the bullet and getting my first HD DVD player this month.

No. It's because the library isn't good on the PS3 and won't be for a while to come. Nearly all the games can be had in better versions on the 360.

The only reason I'd recommend the PS3 to someone right now is for use as a Blu-Ray player. It's great at that task. Too bad Sony shot themselves in the foot and included a disk with such an awful video transfer. There's no way anyone will be impressed with Blu-Ray by watching Talladega Nights.
