PS3 as a DVD Player - Upconvert?

I am redoing my home theater area, and by luck, I was able to grab a PS3 (20GB version) at Best Buy.

I was going to buy an upconvert DVD player with HDMI for about $130, but now I am thinking, does it make sense to buy, or cant I just use my PS3 as my DVD player.

The only issue, is that I am not sure it will upconvert. I have a plama tv, that is not 1080p, but would like to see old movies in 720p.

I have checked out a couple of sites, and there seems to be conflicting points of view. So does anyone have a definitive point of view?

As of now, no, the PS3 won't upconvert your SD DVD's. Next year there is going to be a huge firmware update that will enable upconversion for SD DVD's plus add DTS-HD decoding for Blu-ray. Check out the AVSForum for more info.

Hank is right. I have a 1080p LCD, BD movies play at 1080p, but SD movies only run a 480p.

For now I can use either my XBox 360's HD DVD addon or my Samsung HD960 DVD player to play SD DVDs in 1080p.
