Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive on both PC and Mac

Found this very interesting. The guys over at UNEASYsilence have gotten their Xbox HD-DVD drive working on a Windows XP setup and a Mac. However it didn't play HD-DVDs 100% smoothly on the "low end" XP hardware. The conclusion:

seems like Microsoft has unwilling created a cheap HD-DVD drive, for any Windows user.

Pretty cool. As far as I'm concerned anything that allows more people to buy into these new formats is a good thing.

As Lee Corso sez... Not so fast, my friend!
They were able to get playback at 540p, not even in the same ballpark as true 1080p.
That might change but I would hardly call it HD DVD on a PC.

How is 1080i not in the ballpark of 1080p?

Re: Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive on both PC and Mac

it's2new. we need more evidences from various "product testers" (ie consumers) from different sources. 1 source doesn't mean it works.

with powerful PC's today, i'd imagine VC-1 to be very easily. i know that i can play 1080p .wmv (basically VC-1) at very high bitrates with little issues. it's just a no brainer.

but 1080i? that'll look fugly.

$200 is VERY nice price point and proves that there is demand for it =).

You misunderstood me.
They were only able to get it to work at 540p resolution.

540p isn't in the same ballpark as 720p,1080i, or 1080p.

That is what I meant.

Just because they can watch the movie on the PC doesn't mean they are watching a HD-DVD presentation.

plus, i can't imagine how one can enjoy TrueHD or DTS Master HD. i know i know, it's gaming first, bonus feature is playing HD-DVD... but still =).
