Shopping in Calgary

I know that Amazon would not ship a toshiba player to me here in Sydney but I was gobsmacked when they wouldn't send it to friends of mine who have just moved to Calgary and who would have sent it on to me here.
Is there a decent place I can send them to in Calgary where they can buy either one of the old or new Toshibas for me?

Re: Shopping in Calgary

john a hunter,

Make sure the people in Calgary who will purchased your A1 or XA1 player call Toshiba Canada to get the version 2.0 update CD. That is essential to change DDTrueHD sound from 2 channel to 5.1 multichannel. They should request that to be mailed to their address and not yours...

Re: Shopping in Calgary

If for any reason they don't get the CD, no reason to panic.
Mine arrived with firmware version 1.4 and updating through the Internet connection appeared to be a breeze.

Good luck with your purchase!

Re: Shopping in Calgary

To cut a long story short , I eventually purchased a XA1 from New York as my friends had difficulty finding anything in Calgary and it is now on its way to them and then to me.After numerous efforts, I found someone who who would accept an international credit card and actually encouraged you to telephone and speak to a live, living person if there was any problems.I don't think I can mention their name here but if anyone is in my position, I will be happy to give details. I recommend them highly.A friend is ready to down load the update for me and I've ordered my first 4 hd discs from Amazon with the discount I learned about here.Did include Spartacus even although it seems to have problems. The only thing I missed out on is the Toshiba offer of 3 free discs as my order went through a few days before the offer began.
A big thank you everyone.

Re: Shopping in Calgary

The xa1 arrived safely two days ago but I was only able to set it up today.Very straight forward as the instruction book was well set out and of course I had some help from the posts on this site! The player was made in July and has 1.4 firmware. I tried to get a friend to download to a CDR the latest upgrade as I am computer illiterate but he seemed to have all sorts of difficulties. I will pluck up courage to try to upgrade myself via ethernet this weekend. Until we get an HD DVD of Digital Essentials, I used my SD copy. I found most of my settings to be about right except the white level which I needed to increase from 60 to 75 on my Samsung 61 inch DLP. There are a few flashes between the player and the display which I presume are hdmi problems which hopefully the firmware upgrade will fix. While it is slower that what we are used too, it all worth it when the picture hits the screen.Hood looked the best I have ever seen it and worth all the praise as did Batman and Grand Prix.I nearly cancelled Spartacus after all the bad press. Glad I didn't. It's an old transfer and while some shots are soft and there is some grain in skys ,etc, the detail in most of the scenes, the color saturation and those Roman reds are magnificent and take be back to when I first saw it in London in 70mm in its premire run as a (very)young boy.
Thanks again for all your help and encouragement. I'm now waiting for Bounty and Forbiden Planet.
