HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
My old Dvd Player bit it and I'm not ready to go HD-DVD or Blu Ray yet. What's the best Upconversion player out there?
Thanks

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
Best Upconverting DVD Player on the market is the Denon DVD-2910 (or the new Denon DVD-2930CI). But this player costs more than an HD DVD Player.
You may want to check out the new Denon DVD-1930CI (out this month), which should be available for under $300. Features 1080p upconversion, DVD-Audio, SACD.

Best is subjective. If you are using DVI or HDMI then I recommend Oppo

The 5910 is the best player on the market (at a hefty price).
The Denon 3930ci is coming out soon, as well. It uses the same deinterlacer as the 5910.
I recently demo'd the 2930ci and it is a very nice player.

I own the Oppo 971 and think it does a great job upconverting.
You may only need the cheaper 970 model.
Good Luck!

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
Alf,
Cary Audio is in my back yard. Though I have never seen nor heard any of their products in action. All of their stuff is extremely expensive.
Even if I could afford to drop $4,000 on a DVD player, why would I?
Seriously. I just don't understand such things.
My budget system constrained by WAF
JVC HD-ILA HD-52G787
Panasonic DVD-S52K
Marantz SR5600
Marantz CC4300
NHT IW3s all around

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
I would put my money on the Denon, I am not big on spending money on obscure no name brands personally. IMHO there is an advantage to buying components from well known companies with solid reputations that are known for there build quality and performance.

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
The moment you start considering something > $500, consider the HD-A1. All owners say it's upconverting quality is among the best.

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
Ninjacarwash, what kind of display are you using, is it strictly a component connection or is there HDMI or DVI on board. If you are going to use HDMI/DVI then I wouldn't waste time on an upscaling player unless cost is an issue and we don't know that either. The Oppo has firmware available through the internet that will allow scaling via component. But if cost is not an issue and HDMI/DVI is available, there are testimonials that indicate that the Toshiba is actually doing a better job scaling than the Oppo, Pioneer and Denon.

Re: HELP! - I'm trying to purchase a DVD Player
I would deffinitly say the Toshiba HD-A1 or the Oppo. Thing is the HD-A1 is only $500 next to the High End Denons that could cost you up to 3-4 grand. Why Even buy such a player when HD-DVD players are cheaper and have Ace upconverting. (Samsung Blu-Ray, terrible upconversion)
