HD-DVD @ 720p... worth the upgrade?
I have a 720P projector (the InFocus SP5000, which I am VERY happy with by the way) and I wanted to get some opinions from those who have tried it: how does HD-DVD look on a 720P-native screen at ~110" diagonal? (my seating is a good 12-13 feet from the screen)
Worth the upgrade? Am I going to see a difference if I'm not at 1080 lines of resolution like all the cool kids?

Nice link Alon. I remember reading that last spring but forgot about it. I'm in that market myself and have been wondering too what to do in regards to a new PJ. I'm sure the new 1080p units and their info will be in full force at CEDIA next month. My guess the least expensive one will street for around $3000-maybe less. Probably, Panasonic or Optoma will have a model that is affordable. But there are some GREAt buys right now for 720p models.

Why buy a 720P when it's been past quality-wise by 1080P? I would rather wait and save more money to buy the product that gives me the best picture quality now and is somewhat future protected.

Hey Robert, I realize waiting a bit would squeeze the ultimate out of HD-DVD and over the air HD content as well. But it might be a year before (next fall 07) before the 1080p projectors are in my budget. Right now, I'm slumming on 480i maximum. People are seeing some wonderful images on their 720p projectors...hopefully we'll get a glance at some ballpark pricing on these at CEDIA?

It still goes back to why buy something that you budgeted for that you will want to replace in a couple of years? Now, if you're going to be satisfied with that projector for 4-5 years then go for it.

Hi Tim - 1080p projectors are currently on the market for $10,000 - $40,000. This year we may see 1080p projectors drop as low as $6,000, but I don't think we will see as low as $3,000 in the next 12 months. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Note that respectable companies are already taking preorders on the Sony VPLVW50 "Pearl" 1080p SXRD front projector at just over $4000.
You can find more information on the Sony VPLVW50 "Pearl" -- which is based on the same technology as the Sony Ruby -- in this thread.
The days of $10,000 1080p projectors are quickly coming to an end. Expect 1080p projectors at $2000 within the next two years.

Re: HD-DVD @ 720p... worth the upgrade?
I'm not going to be able to go to a 1080p projector for a looooong time.
The only reason I have a 720p projector is that InFocus was (and probably still is) clearancing refurbished SP5000s (with a free 76" screen that I'll never use, lol) for $799.99 SHIPPED. I'm just a poor college student, so until 1080p projectors get down a LOT in price (probably like... 3-5 years) I'm stuck in my 720p world.
Not to say that it's not a nice world... heh. I'm not complaining.
Thanks for the article, by the way.
