News not good about Sony Blu-ray player

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=711896

This has to be disturbing news that prototypes of the Sony player can't play commercial discs two months before launch. I mean, it's not too long before the production lines have to start running. Why can Samsung do it, but not Sony?

Ok, this is just silly. Do you really think that Sony won't have thier player playing comercial discs at launch? Fear mongering about video quality or other such issues are one thing, but this is just a waste of everyone's time. I mean the worst that happens is that they delay the launch a couple weeks.

I think the point of the guy's post is not that the player won't be able to play commercial discs, but that they seem to be way behind schedule for that to happen. Why do you think the "worst case" scenario is a two week delay? What's to keep it from being longer than that, possibly considerably longer?

And the big deal is? They are already way behind the samsung's launch. I doubt that there is 1 person that would rather have them rush the player out then wait for a quality product. So Sony may delay thier player. Is there a need to be having a discussion about a 3rd hand rumor about a player that may actually be on schedule. Who's to say the prototype the guy supposedly saw wasn't old and not up to date?

The people over at AVS like to argue over any crackpot rumor that someone posts. All this post will do here is make people argue the same points they have posted in 50 other threads here.

The big deal is that the leader of the Blu-ray format seems to be having a lot of trouble producing a viable player. It's rather embarassing. I wouldn't call October 25 "rushing things". That's only a few weeks before the scheduled PS3 debut. Hmmm, maybe that's where all of Sony's resources are going.

If that's the case, it would just be more disturbing news. They don't even have a fully functional prototype two months before launch, and have to make do with an old one?

Re: News not good about Sony Blu-ray player

Since there is already a Blu-Ray player on the market, a delay on the sony can only qualify as "annoying". Disturbing would be if there were no player at all, from any manufacturer.

If these comments came from someone other than Robert George, they would lack credibility for me. Mr. George is a knowledgeable and highly credible source, IMO

Robert was reporting what he saw firsthand. There was nothing "3rd hand" or "crackpot" about saying the prototype can't play commercial discs or that the Sony rep gave no useful information about the availability of BD50.

Re: News not good about Sony Blu-ray player

The title of this thread is a 2nd hand rumor. You have no proof that Sony cannot play comercial discs at this time, nor does the original poster indicate that they cannot. All he says is that the Blu-Ray prototype he personally witnessed could not play commercial discs. Since Sony is based in japan and responsible for the developement of the player, the US branch may not have the latest and greatest at this point. The most obvious reason that it may not play commercial discs at this time is that Sony may still be working on the firmware getting it prepared for launch. Toshiba was still correcting the firmware in thier player months after it came out, so you could cut Sony some slack.

No, it's a report of what a Sony dealer saw firsthand--that two months before scheduled product launch, Sony is not showing its US dealers a working player. That's a fact, not a rumor.

Why would people in the US care about what may exist in Japan if there's no sign of it being available here?
