Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs?

Wonder how much truth is in this article? Scarey if true and the death for sure of Blu-Ray. Boing Boing

Sony's new Blu-Ray equipped PlayStations won't be able to play Blu-Ray DVD movies, because they couldn't meet all the requirements set out by the cartel that controls Blu-Ray DRM. This can't be true. Could Sony have screwed up this badly?

Can't even play video games from what I've heard. Nobody is quite sure what the PS3 will be able to do...

Re: Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs

The quote in the article is from this earlier C/Net story, and even links to it. The Sony rep is clearly talking about the BD burner already discussed on these pages. There's no mention of the PS3 at all, though coming from such a reputable source as BoingBoing (who!) we shouldn't be surprised. People can link to pretty much any source on the internet, but they're not all worth using. I'm fairly sure there are some sites claiming aliens crashed the planes into the twin towers. That doesn't mean it really happened.

Even if this were true, why would a game machine not being able to play BD movies be the death knell? The PS3’s ability to play movies may be a plus for the success of Blu-Ray, but it is hardly certain that it is central to the format.

It is not.

No.

Like Rob, I actually read the article referenced. It would seem that Boing is a pretty accurate description of the site.

Sorry, sounds like bull pucky to me. It doesn't even make any sense. Clearly an strict advocate against Blu-Ray or Sony just pulled that out of thin air.

The point I was trying to make is that this is just a continuing stream of bad news and if there was any truth to it at all, the 4th quarter would be a dismal time for Sony's fledgling format. I stated that the information was suspect.

Just a question Aaron: why pass along suspect information? Reading the referenced article is enough to let anyone know that there is no truth to what was in the Boing site.

This is just my opinion, but starting threads such as this one, that have no credibility, damage your own when you make a posting with some merit.

Re: Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs?

Well, I picked this up off UpcomingDiscs.com and thought it had a possibility of some truth since much of what Sony has claimed regarding Blu-Ray has been patently false. So who's credibility is on the line here?

Well, since nothing outside of boingboing's patently false headline and post, including the actual article, makes any mention whatsoever of the PS3, why do you think we wonder why you posted the link?

Re: Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs?

Wishful thinking? I openly admit I hope Blu-Ray sinks like the Titanic. I didn't really believe it but there have been a number of negative items reported about the Blu-Ray performance that seemed unbelievable, yet ultimately were true. This just seems to be one that didn't pan out. You can't win 'em all!
