What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
My Toshiba has it for DVD but not HD-DVD. What gives...?
Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.
I survived the AFI top 100 Film Challenge! I've seen them all.

Re: What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
I do not think there is anything that would preclude HD-DVD from having a last memory function. The lack of such a function looks like an oversight by Toshiba in their rush to market a machine before the Bluray launch. If both 1st gen machines are missing the function then it will most likely be introduced on the next generation.

Re: What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
I don't have personal knowledge of this, but I've seen it suggested that there needs to be a Resume Play flag set by the studio, and the software for HD authoring just recently added this as a standard option (just like Bookmarking has to be authorized, which Warner does and Universal doesn't). So we may be seeing it soon, but not for a while.

someone else suggested it was due to the DRM involved on the HD discs-

I like this theory as it could easily fit the facts. I mailed in the card that promised to send the buyer an upgrade disc when available. I hope we could be in an upgrade at some point....?

Re: What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
I called Toshiba tech support on an unrelated issue (having to do with the ethernet connection) and was told that resume of HD-DVD discs was a disc-dependent thing, not a player limitation. The fact that bookmarks are disc dependent (Warner yes, Universal no) would seem to bear this out. He said there are a lot more disc dependent factors in the HD-DVD format than there were on dvd.
He also said that one of the primary issues they're trying to address with a software update is the HDMI handshake.
By the way, when I called the tech support number in the owner's manual I was immediately answered by a real human being, not a recorded menu, who immediately handed me off to an HD-A1 specialist who came on the line after less than 20 seconds on hold. I am impressed! This wasn't a call center in India, either, not that I haven't had good experiences with South Asian based tech support.

Re: What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
Last Memory is optional! That's daft! I passed over players without it back in '98. I hope this disc by disc case excrement gets remedied. It's needs a good wipe....

Re: What about HD-DVD prevents the current player from having Last Memory?
It is disc dependent--every HD-DVD I have won't resume after stopping, but the demo disc at my local Best Buy will. If you're playing a Warner disc, hit the B button on the remote before stopping play--that will set a bookmark which you can access after stopping play.
