The PT-AE900U is a very well reviewed projector and very popular for home
theaters.  The projector lamp has
only 751 hours of use on the lamp,  (rated by Panasonic up to 3000hrs). 
The "smooth screen" technology used by Panasonic virtually eliminates the screen
door pixel pattern that plagued many other LCD based projectors. I used it with
a home made 120" fixed screen made from Wilsonart (Designer White) counter top
material, in a completely light controlled (dark) room. To say that the picture
knocked my socks off is an understatement! Before that, I used a slightly
smaller screen made from blackout cloth purchased at a local fabric store. It
produced an equally impressive picture, but I decided to build an even larger
screen than was possible with the blackout cloth. Heck, when I first tested the
unit on the first day I got it, I used an old, slightly yellowed, bed sheet
which I hung with thumb tacks from the ceiling and couldn't believe that even
with such a crude "screen", it was still producing an amazing picture.

I purchased this projector NEW from Costco in
Sept. of 2006. It has always produced an outstanding picture right out of the
box from day one, right up until last week when I stopped using it. Reason being
is that I upgraded to another, newer 1080p model. To be perfectly honest, the
newer model (PT-AE2000U) although having more resolution and features, is not as
noticeable an upgrade as I  had hoped for, or imagined. Perhaps I expect
too much. I would still rate the
PT-AE900U projector very highly, even
up against the newer 1080p models.

One caveat: Do not buy this projector and
expect it to produce an excellent picture if used in a room that is not 100%
light controlled. It is NOT meant to be used in a brightly lit (or even
dimly lit for that matter), living room type of environment. I converted my
family room (in the basement) into a home theater. I even darkened the ceiling
and walls so that light bouncing off the screen would not be reflected back and
cause the picture quality to diminish. If you want a TV that can be used in a
room with any light, do NOT buy a front projector. Stick with a conventional TV,
such as a picture tube, plasma, or LCD model.

It
has never abused in any way. Never used for more than 7 - 8 hours at a time.
Mostly used for only one movie or a few HD TV shows in any given day. Always
used in Economy Lamp Mode. Dust filter has been cleaned every 100 hours of use.
There are no dust blobs, or any other picture defects that I can detect. It has
only been operated by me, and I do not smoke or have any children.

Phenomenal Picture Quality


The brighter,
1100-lumens PT-AE900U is equipped with three 16:9 native, 1,280 x 720 pixel
(2.76 million effective pixels) HD LCD panels that produce a phenomenal picture
quality and beautifully saturated colors even in well-lit rooms. The model's 2X
optical zoom lens allows image size adjustment to accommodate any room layout or
screen size. For instance, the PT-AE900U can project a 100" picture from a
distance of less than 10 feet or from a distance of more than 19 feet.

Dynamic Iris


Dynamic Iris, with
scene tracking capability, constantly adjusts the light volume and gamma curve
in real time, so the picture is always optimal and transitions between scenes
are amazingly smooth and natural.

Smooth Screen


The PT-AE900U is also outfitted with new Smooth Screen technology that
effectively eliminates the "screen door effect" (visible spacing between pixels)
and gives the projector a sharp, detailed HD picture that is remarkably smooth
and film-like.

Cinema Color Management


The PT-AE900U's acclaimed Cinema Color Management (CCM) technology controls both
contrast and brightness to provide faithful reproduction of even subtle hues,
moving color correction closer to the process used for motion pictures. With CCM,
individual correction of more than 1 billion colors is possible. CCM technology
also lets users choose from among seven preset picture modes, in which the
contrast, brightness and gamma levels are adjustable making it easy to select
the optimal settings for any source material.

Wide
Range
of Input Options


To accommodate virtually any home electronic device, the PT-AE900U supports a
full range of input sources, including DVD and video players, PCs and game
machines. An HDMI input provides compatibility with HD digital sources, while
component video input terminals deliver full quality, detailed images from high
end, progressive scan DVD players. The PC IN terminal can be connected to a game
machine or PC. Other terminals include composite and S-video, as well as a
serial terminal for connecting a touch panel controller or similar device
