I noticed the first few threads in a forum area are missing once I am logged in. The only way for me to see the thread on the forum page is if I'm logged out. For example, I can't see the "Upscaling/HDef DVD Player merged thread" in audio/video sources area if I'm logged in.

It is probably because when you are logged in it starts your "last time on the forum" from that time. When you are logged out it shows you everything. Being logged in uses your default viewing layout, number of threads to show you, etc. based on the last time you were logged on to the site.
