Re: HD DVD player updates

Sadly no, because in my infinite wisdom i didnt have insurance. Lived for years in Manhattan, and in some other seedier large cities, always had insurance, never got robbed. Move to the suburbs of nevada, and boom.."worst christmas ever"!!

Wanted to get a larger HDTV, just didnt want it to be for that reason..haha.

Regardless of the WB deal, i HAVE to replace my Toshiba HD unit, so if anyone knows of any great deals, please pass them along. I've ot at least 60 HD-DVD titles, so its worth it.

Again, very sorry to hear this, Win.

Check ebay for HD DVD players; to hear Bill Hunt tell it, their appearance there has spiked in the past week.

Re: HD DVD player updates

I'm gonna try and stick with a new player for now. I know Amazon has the A3 for $179, but i just missed the 10 free films offer. Hoping they revisit that deal in the near future.

Re: HD DVD player updates

Just rec'd a notice from Panasonic that my one year warranty is about to expire along with of course an offer to buy their "Customer Care Plan." Although pricey on its face ($49.95 for one year or $109.95 for three), when I look at it from the perspective of it being "amortized" over three years it seems more palatable. $3/month to have coverage in the event of any issue for three years.

Yeah I know on the one hand these plans are generally rips. But on the other, despite the stability of the BD10, I'm wondering if a first gen machine playing a new format might be more susceptible to issues over time than other players.

Anyone else get the notice/thinking about buying the Plan?

Re: HD DVD player updates

Wow, i havent gotten notice of the plan yet, but it doesnt sound too bad to me. I figure i got the unit for free, so i'd be buying a new unit for $100.00, and not have to worry about anything for 3 years. If i get the notice i'll probably got for it, especially since my unit has been in for repair once already.

Wrong thread maybe? The BD10 isn't an HD DVD player.

Re: HD DVD player updates

Michael:

As evinced by the thread's history, this sort of became an omnibus thread for a variety of player-related and software-related issues for those of us who attended HME last year and received both a free/discounted HD DVD player and the BD10. As you're probably aware, AG started the thread when we were experiencing delays in receiving the HD DVD players, but it morphed into discussion of many other things despite the thread title staying the same.

I was/am interested in communicating specifically with HME attendees who received a BD10 for free last year since it's been 12 months, the expiration of the manuf's warranty is imminent for all of us and we're all in the same boat. Having received the deck for free, some folks might be more inclined to buy the Plan because there was no out-of-pocket costs to get the player. Others might be less invested/inclined to repair for the same reason.

That's why I posted here: I want(ed) to reach this particular "audience." But I'm pleased to note that my posts (continue to) merit your attention.

Yes and no. But hey, it's your question. If you think this is the best way to reach your audience, be my guest.

BTW, I bought the three-year plan when the player first arrived. Panasonic's plan provides excellent coverage, and as you say, it's a first-gen machine.

The BD-10 isn't worth the investment for warranty. It was a give-away player.
While it...works... it's not internet-capable, as nearly all newer players are. (incl Entry-Level machines, too)

Improved Firmware access, faster boot times, and the possibility of getting another player (at some point) with a better remote... Money should be set aside for a future player. Not maintaining this one.

My $.03

Only two players available today are internet capable: PS3 and BD-50 (which is in short supply). Samsung has an ethernet port put won't be BD-Live capable until October.

No Signature...How boring is that!

Everyone has to make their own decisions about value. As it turns out, the BD-10 has a feature that's worth something to me and that few players have (not even the BD-50): a set of 7.1 analog outputs.

I agree with Michael..I like the direct audio outs.

I never got any notice of getting an extended warranty on either the BD or HD-DVD players. It's some I think I would be incline to do.
