Here are my "belated" thoughts on EMA....(Wednesday & Thursday)

Wednesday:
Thx, THX great presentation. Different from the other presentations. But I learned a lot more about my personal HT gear and what I can do to make it even better without having to spend a whole lot of money. I met him before as I worked for Pioneer in the past and he used to do a lot of presentations for us as well. He is really passionate about THX. It shows and I love that about him.
HD-DVD interactive was a little long. Especially since we sat through 300 with WB one day prior to this presentation.
I liked the research & marketing company talking to us about the "format war". Marketing trends and why things are the way they are. He really put it into perspective for me.

Now my favorite part for the entire show was the discussion panel. I was looking forward to this the most. And let me just say, it was everything that I had hoped for that it would be. I thought it was very brave and fair from Ken to join us for this and wish to thank him again for participating on this panel. Ron explained the reason why the BR camp didn't join in. That would have been the ultimate. I just think next time to make it a little smoother we should have questions/topics prepared. It was a mess sometimes and things got a little to headed at times as well. I know that most of us feel bad about this "war". Ken is just one part of it, one (only major) studio that only support HD-DVD. I am sure he gets asked "why" all the time. And there is nothing that he alone can do about this. I am sure that he took all of this feedback back to his studio and use it for future changes etc. I came out of this panel with a lot more respect for the HD-DVD camp and look forward to using their products.
The Rhino party was to crowed and the sound to loud....man, I'm getting old. I had one drink and left. Didn't care for this one.
The closing reception and the comedy party were great. Man, I was rolling on the floor the entire time. Great entertainment.

Now, the EMA show itself. Again I big thank you for the people at dts. Great suite, great sound, great presentation, and very nice and helpful people. I also got a chance, before they tore down their suite, to spend some time at the Sony suite. It was almost like my own private BR presentation. We must have spend about 45 minutes talking about BR and sampling all kinds of BR demo's. Very cool!
The rest of EMA........not so great. Actually, quite a let down. If I would have known what the show was I would have left on Wednesday evening and saved some money on my hotel bill. Maybe next time, we use this day for more HTF events/meetings. Or like suggested before, maybe do joined meetings with the people from EMA and video retailers. I would have loved to be a part of their meetings as well. And to learn from their business. How can we help each other out? How can we train consumers on HD, let alone the format war. We have a lot of work ahead of us to get these format(s) to survive. And I honestly feel that it starts with us.

Now, what some were saying about us getting "freebies"

1) ......Airfare: $300, Hotel: $500, Meals: $100. I had to take 3 days off from work. I could have bought these players and software myself and come out ahead. No, that is not the reason why I attended this show. Did I like it....yes. Did I except it....yes.

2) Do "they" know how much money we spend on software? Do they know how much more money we spend then the average consumers on these products? Do "they" know how much more money we spend for being "front runners" We buy something now, 1 year later it is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper.

So bottom line. If we get invited back next year and we get absolutely nothing, will I still go........FOR SURE!!!!!!

I love my hobby. I love this industry. And finally I love sharing my passion with other people that share the same passion.

Thanks to you all for a great show, and a great time. Hope to see you all back at the next HTF event.

Jason,

It was very nice to have met you as well. Hope the "Starz" shots didn't kill you to much the next morning. But it was all worth it to see Paris dance....right?????
