Ernest Borgnine
Turner Classic Movies will be running an all day Ernest Borgnine film festival on August 14th! Titles are subject to change but here's the published listing (with my comments):
CHINA CORSAIR (1951)- His film debut as a "Chinaman" that he talked about at EMA.
MAN ON A STRING (1960)- Co-starring Kerwin (Sinbad) Mathews.
THE CATERED AFFAIR (1956)- Ernie holds his own back in the Bronx with co-star Bette Davis.
BARABBAS (1962)- Gladiators! (Eventually, anyway.)
TORPEDO RUN (1958)- Ernie's back in the Navy, serving aboard a submarine.
ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968)- Ernie is one of the stars of Howard Hughes' favorite movie.
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953)- A breakthrough role for Ernie as Sgt. Fatso.
MARTY (1955)- Ernie won the Best Actor Oscar, the New York Critics' award and the BFA award for best foreign player. He signed a five-year contract with Hecht-Hill-Lancaster and his fee was $5,000, plus 2 1/2 % of the net for five years.
JUBAL (1956)- Othello out west with Glenn Ford and Rod Steiger.
BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955)- Ernie gets beaten up by a one-armed Spencer Tracy.
THE STRANGER WORE A GUN (1953)- His first appearance with Lee Marvin.
SEASON OF PASSION (1959)- Ernie goes Down Under as an Australian cane-cutter. Anne Baxter is his girl friend and John Mills is his buddy.
THE RABBIT TRAP (1959)- Ernie as a working stiff in a low-budget 'social realist' drama. Keep an eye out for Don Rickles.
There are some rare titles here. Set your recorders if you want to see Ernie in love and in action.
