If you're not familiar with the two major publications of the home video industry, Video Business and Home Media Retailing, each of them will be publishing show dailies at EMA. Other publications available to be picked up should include the Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

If you have home video industry related business cards be sure to bring them. You'll find that the exhibitors expect folks to drop them off if they want to be contacted later about their products. I generally go through about 30 cards, as it's a small show (and I've been around for awhile). But, I'll be bringing more to pass along to other HTF attendees.

Stop by the press room at least once or twice a day to get updates on the celebrities & autograph signings. Look over the press releases to see if there are any exhibitors you want to visit.

NOTE: It 's considered unprofessional and bad manners to eviscerate press kits just to get a photograph or a sell-sheet. Be considerate of the PR efforts of exhibitors in putting the press materials out. These kits can be a big budget item for the smaller labels.

I've done it as well. Twice.

It's overpriced (as are most things in Vegas these days), but still worth going if you're even a moderate Trek fan.

Fairly easy to get to now that the monorail is open. Walk to the Bally/Paris monorail stop (OK, not exactly a short walk). Get on, ride it to the Hilton. The Hilton Monorail stop lets out right into the Star Trek attraction. I'm sure that was no accident.

If you don't want to pay the bucks for the 2 rides & exhibits, you can still have fun for free walking through the world's biggest Trek store (watch out for the occasional Borg drone wandering around), and eating at Quark's. Yes, they have Romulan Ale, and Klingon Blood Wine as well. And there are Ferengi waiters who are always ready to discuss the Rules of Acquisition and trade insults with us Hu-mons.

Dumb question. What exactly is a sell-sheet, and why would we (consumer/press) even be interested in one? Sounds like something for the dealers.

I guess in general I'm looking for guidelines like Gord gave us about the 34th floor. What kind of stuff is dealer-only? I want to be a good EMA citizen and not waste the time of folks who are trying to conduct business.

There are no dumb questions. A sell-sheet is a sheet or flyer describing a release. It generally includes art work, technical data (running time, color or B&W, etc), stock #, street date & order date, bar codes, etc. Many labels don't send out a lot of screeners to retailers. They'll send out sell-sheets with the pertinent information about a release to solicit interest and orders. Sell-sheets can be easily modified to run as advertisements in local newspapers and turned into store flyers. There should be sell-sheets available at EMA announcing new product into the 4th quarter. If there's a title announced that you're interested in, take one.

The Trek experience is a little overpriced and I understand there is even more now than the last time I was there in 2005. I've been twice mostly due to the transporter and would probably go again. I don't want to reveal too much for anyone wanting to go for the first time.

Andrew - thanks for the info on what not to do. I too want to leave the Expo with a positive impression and hope that we are invited back next year. Any other "don'ts" we should be aware of?

Just be professional and courteous. If a sign is outside a suite door that says a meeting is taking place, don't enter. Try to come back later. If you enter a suite with an open door and there's a meeting taking place, don't interrupt. If it's not an important meeting, a member of the exhibitor's staff will come over to see what you want.

It's expensive to exhibit in a suite at the Venetian. The smallest suite goes for $3,600 for EMA members. The next in size goes for $8,500 for EMA members. That's just the exhibit space. These people are here to do serious business. If they have the time, they're glad to schmooze & kibbitz. But if someone who's going to buy product comes in, let them do what they came to EMA to do- try to make money.

If you run into EMA staff, don't brag about all the swag you're collecting. They can see your overstuffed shopping bag. Tell them how much you're learning about the industry and what you think you're contributing by being allowed to attend.

Try to do the pre-show planning I suggested earlier. But remember, there's nothing you can find at EMA that's "The Golden Snitch." It's only stuff and not even "the stuff that dreams are made of." But it is lots of fun and informative to attend and learn about the industry.

Actually there are two monorail stops considerably closer...the Harrah's/Imperial Palace stop and the Flamingo stop. As with all of the stops along the Strip, you're forced to walk through the casinos and a veritable labyrinth of walkways to get to the monorail stations. And then be prepared to fork over $5 a ride.

Oh man, forgot all about the Trek experience, definitly gonna have to find some time to bring the Parents over there. It's not a cheap cab ride if I remember right tho, its a good hike off the strip.

Hmmm Business cards, now THAT would be pretty cool =) Probably too late for this year tho =)

You can often find 2 for 1 Trek coupons in some of the tourist publications (and I'm not talking about the T&A magazines being handed out on the streets!) The free pocket sized 24/7 guides are great reference material and have such coupons inside.
