Danny just can’t see how crazy women are for him. With his strikingly good looks, modest personality, and single status, he’s a magnet for hot women. But Danny is blind; despite this his brother tries to set him up with a variety of girls with personalities that would make any sane man crazy. Danny doesn’t need crazy women nor does he need sympathy from any of them. Instead Danny falls for a young Indian woman, Leeza, who works as a receptionist at an eye center where he’s preparing to participate for a revolutionary sight experiment. But Danny’s heart breaks as he learns their cultures are different and she’s already been promised to someone else. His next hope in life lies in the experiment that could let him see the world for the first time. Blind Dating is a warm-hearted film that’s simple and meant to entertain. It uses the same sets/settings consistently throughout the film and doesn’t include complex dialogue or scenarios. The acting is average and not quite refined. My biggest criticism goes to Anjali Jay; while she put on a commendable performance, her Indian accent never sounds consistent scene to scene, or even within a scene. It’s sounds heavy at one moment and too British/English the next. The film has also gone under a bit of tinkering for this release; a page of a sexual act in the Kama Sutra book has been blurred as it's held up in front of the camera. I'm not sure why this would be the case for a PG-13 film. The film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio has been recomposed to 1.78:1 for this DVD. When watching the image, it doesn’t feel tight even though a portion of the film frame has been discarded. The presentation is just average; details in the dark parts of the pictures are somewhat undefined and colours appear slightly thick in these areas too. Brighter scenes fare better. Colours look a bit more saturated and natural, although the scene of Danny and Leeza sitting together on the baseball outfield has the grass looking too pumped with intense green. The resolution of this film is good but can feel as if my eyes wanted to see more. Compression artefacts are minor and acceptable for DVD presentation. Edge enhancement, ghosting, or other video related artefacts aren’t detractions from the film.  This 5.1 soundtrack is a snoozer for home theaters but perfectly fine for the film’s content. Dialogue is fairly well integrated into the mix giving a sense of wholeness with the rest of the soundstage. It isn’t recorded forward or too far back in the mix, so it was a pleasure to hear. The rest of the mix is modest; music drives the soundtrack during the film’s funny scenes and supporting sound effects happen mostly in the front channels. While rear channel information exists with an attempt to create a bit of space, it’s hardly effective because it’s so low in volume. The LFE channel isn’t required for this film, thus I counted maybe two instances of its use and that was for the bass of a song playing. The encoding is Dolby Digital only. TACTILE TRANSDUCER ON/OFF?: OFF No LFE fun on this 5.1 surround mix. Deleted Scenes are what take up the bulk of the space on this disc. There are a total of 16 of them, each offering extensions of existing scenes. A few are a pleasure to view, but most just slow the film down with additional character development or repetitive scenarios such as why Danny doesn’t ever have a good date. The film’s final cut has enough of this theme so any more, such as what is presented in these deleted scenes, is just too much. The additional scenes add up to just less than 16 minutes. A 5 minute Behind the Scenes of Blind Dating featurette shows clips from the film, interviews with cast and crew. Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a nice short as in what we’d see on a network during the film’s theatrical run. A non-anamorphic theatrical trailer of the film is here (at 1.85:1) as are trailers for Feast of Love, The Comebacks, and Blue State. IN THE END... This is a cute romantic comedy released just in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s rental material to cuddle up with your sweetheart and enjoy some Blind Dating. Michael Osadciw February 02, 2007.
