I agree. Few films this year looked as good as LA did at night. Even a few daylight scenes were stunningly shot.
There is an award given out for cinematography, called the "American Society of Cinematographers, USA". This years nominees included:
Aviator - Robert Richardson
Collateral - Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron
Passion of the Christ - Caleb Deschanel
Ray - Pawel Edelman
A Very Long Engagement - Bruno Delbonnel
The awards are given out February 13th, and usually they post it around on websites since it's a forerunner for the Oscars.
It has a very good chance of coming out on top I think, but Richardson and especially Deschanel are among the best in the business, with 5 previous nominations each.
But still, so many of the shots used in Collateral were spectacular, and I can't recall a film (other than Mann's Heat) that utilized LA locations so effectively.
