JVC 40FH96 - Is it dead?

I have (had?) at 42" JVC 40FH96 LCD television and just last night we were watching something and the screen went black. At first I figured it was channel, and then perhaps a bad connection somewhere. This morning we took it off the wall, unplugged everything and then just plugged in the power to see if I could get to the menu. Nothing. The power light comes on but no picture at all. We've had it for just over 3 years now and it's been used quite regularly. My wife is at home with the kids so the TV is on quite often; roughly calculated I'd say its been used between 12,000 and 18,000 hours. These things are supposed to last much longer than that I thought. Does it sound likes its toast? Is there a bulb or something that can be replaced? Is there another way I can test it? Thanks in advance.

Re: JVC 40FH96 - Is it dead?

I ended up taking it in to a repair shop for a diagnostic last week and just got a call back from them; seems like the "digital board" is defective. Cost to replace would be ~$850. Had I purchase the TV for $1000-$1500 it would make sense to just go buy a new one but I paid quite a bit more than that 3 years ago.. I'm stuck as to what to do. I wonder if I could purchase the digital board online somewhere and replace it myself? Any thoughts/comments?

Save the money from the repairs and go TV shopping. For a few hundreds more, you can "upgrade" to a similar sized TV and gain some benefits in connectivity options and technology advances.

1. What a great reason to get a bigger TV

2. You may be able to find the parts you need at MCM Electronics. I was able to repair my old Hitachi CRT (after I got a bigger 61" to replace it). I ordered 2 Convergence Integrated Circuits and purchased a service manual at Service Manuals.net. Removed the old parts and soldered in the new ones and amazingly, it worked. Saved a few hundred dollars for sure. Now my son has a 51" TV in his room

Great point.. think I'll start looking around for a new set (the new 7 series from Samsung looks amazing!).

Thanks for the links -- that's exactly the type of response I was hoping for. If they have the proper parts I'll look at trying to fix the JVC myself (down the road) and use it as a 2nd set.

Re: JVC 40FH96 - Is it dead?

Well -- I didn't waste any time. Went out Saturday and came home a couple hours later with a Samsung 46" LN46A750. What a beautiful picture. I thought the picture was amazing on my JVC.. until I saw this one; colors are much more vivid and blacks are so much darker. It took me most of the afternoon explaining to my wife why this new TV was worth the $. I felt like a salesperson by the time I was done; almost broke a sweat. It was a hard sell but I think I closed the deal!
