Best 720p, <50" bang for the buck?

I've got my George Bush stimulus check, and I want a TV. I'm going to be watching at about 10-12 feet. I'd like something between 40"-50." I prefer plasma, but I'm open. What I really want is the best contrast ratio, color saturation, color accuracy, and minimum motion blur and/or juddering. Mostly movies (standard DVD for now, BR later), older games for the kids (Gamecube), and an upgrade to the HD channels on cable.

So, my budget tops out in the $1200 range (saving some of my check for other things), but with 720p, I'd like to get it down less than that. So what's the best bang for the buck in this range? If I could get an $800-$1000 TV with a *great* picture, I'll be happy.

I'd take a look at the Vizio 50'' plasmas. You can pick up a couple of models from Costco or Sam's Club from $1199-$1299. I've had one for the last year in the master bedromm adn have been very satisfied with it. Yea, I know they may not be as good as other more expensive brands but for yyour price range I think they are great

Sitting from that far away, I'd go for a 50" plasma set, which means extending your budget little more (around $1250) for last year's 720p Panasonic 50" model, Th-50PX75U, or a little higher for this year's model, TH-50PX80U ($1400 or less, plus there is a Memorial Weekend sale coming up, so that's another chance to stretch your dollars).

Have you considered a projector? With that budget and seating distance, I'd get a 720p projector(If your room will accomodate one of course). You can buy a nice 720p projector for about $800. And you can make a screen for about $40.
