Big black U in middle of screen

I have a D56W20 RCA tv that has a big black U shape in middle of screen, about 8in from each side. The U goes from bottom to top of screen, this stays on the screen even when turned off. I have had this tv for 3yrs, been nothing but trouble with this screen...it developed green streaks less than 5 months after I bought it, had the screen cleaned made the streaks a lot worse.. The shop said screen was defected but RCA said it was not so no replacement. Anyone know what this could be? It is getting worse each day.

Do you have unsheilded stereo speakers sitting next to each side of the set?

Can you post some pics of it?

What kind of set is it? An RPTV, plasma, LCD?

No I do not have speakers, and it is a RPTV. The black U stays in the same spot.

Has it been cleaned inside recently? I wonder if something has fallen into the projection lens and you're seeing the shadow of maybe a dustball though I'm not sure if would be seen with the set turned off. Maybe a problem with the renticular screen -- warped or dirty?
