Audio Out not working: Picky Amp or bad TV?

So I was planning on upgrading my LCD TV's speakers, but first I just wanted to see what potential improvement there would be, so I hooked up my computers speakers (Swans D1080MKII hooked up thru RCA L and R, and have a built in Amp) to my TV's Audio Out (RCA L and R). The problem here is, 3/4 of the time it doesn't work. It receives no audio from the TV at all; if I turn the volume knob up, nothing. I've tried reconnecting the audio cables, turning the speakers on and off, turning the TV on and off... nada. When it does work though (tends to be pretty random, I dunno what I did when it does work), it works great. However, if I get it working and then turn the TV off, if I turn the TV on again the speakers won't work again. Is all of this just a case of a picky amplifier or is my TV kinda bad? The Speakers which were meant for hooking up to a computer work absolutely perfectly with my Computer. I plan on getting a Sonic T Amp and some Insignias, but if it's gonna be this bad I don't want to waste my money.

Here's the TV

Here's the Speakers (Not the ones I'll ultimately be using, just the ones I tested with)

Do the speakers actually have RCA connectors (does you computer soundcard support them?) or does it have a single mini-plug that you're running through an adapter to connect to the TV? If the latter, I'd suspect the problem was more likely to be in that connection than in the TV. In any event, computer speakers are not a good test for TV audio. Your best bet for a real upgrade is a decent surround reciever (good entry-level ones are comparatively cheap) and a couple of good speakers. (You can add sub, surrounds and center channel later.) In that case you'd be connecting your video sources (cable/satellite, DVD player), not the TV, to the receiver.

Are you sure the TV's outputs are even intended for external speakers? They aren't always.

Regards,

Joe

Re: Audio Out not working: Picky Amp or bad TV?

The speakers have an RCA L and R connector; I actually have to use a RCA > 3.5mm cable that came with the speakers to connect it to the computer.

I think the audio out is intended for external speakers, the manual says I connect the audio out to either a DVD Home Theatre (huh?) or an amplifier (there we go ).

Oh, and if I do go the receiver route, how cheap could it go? For speakers, I only intend to get a single pair of insignias and nothing else (if I have more money to spend later on, I'd rather spend it on a subwoofer for my computer anyway). Can they match the price I intend to pay for a Sonic T Amp ($60ish)? I intended this to be a really budget upgrade around the $100 mark (With a Sonic T Amp and Insignias [once they go on sale for around $50ish] I plan to pay around $120-130ish total after shipping). Also, if everything has to be connected to the receiver to get output from the speakers, will I also need HDMI in and Component in to connect my PS3 and Wii?

Re: Audio Out not working: Picky Amp or bad TV?

Real receivers start at about $100 (for 2 stereo), HT receivers at about $150 (for a "no name" or "house brand" like Insignia) and $200 for a brand-name, entry-level 5.1 HT receiver. So that's at about twice your budget with the speakers you have in mind.

The good thing about your plan is that it gets you an audio upgrade now within the constraints of your budget. The downside is that if you want to go to a full HT system later, you'll pretty much have to replace everything you buy now and start from scratch. Does the T-amp even have a subwoofer output?

I can't tell you what might be wrong with your current setup. The only real test is going to be hooking up the T-amp and either the computer speakers or your final speakers (or a couple you borrow from a friend) and seeing what happens. If the same problem is there, check your TV settings. (Some devices do strange things like not down-converting digital audio via the analog outputs if you have digital audio enabled - which might be one explanation for what you're seeing.) Then call the store or the manufacturer about a warranty repair. If the sound works then there was some quirk with your current setup and it probably isn't worth your time trying to figure it out.

Regards,

Joe

Re: Audio Out not working: Picky Amp or bad TV?

Yeah it turns out something is wrong with my TV... I think. I found out how to get it to work now Apparently I have to change the video input source at least once, and then the speakers start working. Weird. Also, I noticed that before I change the video input source, the audio is pretty quiet, but after changing the input source, it suddenly gets loud again without me having touched the volume button. Methinks something is broken?
