Any info on the Samsung HLT5076S?

This is the 50' Slim 1080P DLP model and it's on sale everywhere for $1500. I know the price is great, but does anyone have anything to say about this TV good or bad before we make the trip to BestBuy?

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but both Adam Gregorich and Gregg Loewen have good things to say about the Samsungs.

Re: Any info on the Samsung HLT5076S?

This particular set can have a problem with slight 'bowing' of the horizontal lines on the screen, basically a geometry issue. Over on AVS Forum there's an owner's thread for the HLTXX76 sets, and some people there attribute this to the ultraslim cabinet lacking rigidity. I just purchased the HLT5676 from Amazon, and what I see is that with a 2:35 film the black bars on the top & bottom are higher on either end by about 1/4" compared to the middle. I haven't really been able to watch more than a few minutes on the set due to remodeling going on in the basement, but it didn't seem to affect the picture. Some people on AVS say their sets don't have the problem at all, others have sent their sets back because of this and are damning Samsung for making the worst TVs in the history of the planet.

If I were you I'd go and take another look at the set in the store before you buy it and see if the problem is visible at all, and if you even care about it even if you do see it on one of the sets.

This review from May 07 is for the previous generation 1080P Samsung, but it's got some helpful tips about setting up the TV as far as menu options, etc.

hi guys

Samsung makes some great displays. As with ALL RPTV digital displays you will have geometry errors. There is nothing to be done about most of them.

With the price of flat panels coming down so quickly, also consider a plasma or LCD panel.

Regards

Gregg

Re: Any info on the Samsung HLT5076S?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I broke down my wife and we got the 5676 model instead thanks to an error by best buy. They were short 1 set of the 5076 so they gave us the 56' model for the same price for the inconveinence.

This is the first big TV I've ever owned and I'm 100% happy. I don't notice any bowing or anything wrong with the picture at all. The only problem I had was with the sound but that was a setting on my cable box. I've read alot of reviews about these samsungs that say the sound is terrible, but I wonder if people have the same problem because of their cable box. There was a setting for normal, wide, and narrow sound.....wide was crazy low, normal was better, and narrow was perfect. I can leave the TV on 30% sound and it's loud as hell.

Luckily I got it on a sunday so I got to watch football all day long in hi-def and it was gorgeous. If anyone else is wondering about the samsung slim DLP's they're fantastic.

** Edit, see you got the 56". A fine TV for the price IMO, and the bigger the better when it comes to HDTVs. At the 50" size the plasmas are an attractive buy, but over 50" and the RPTVs really have the price/performance advantage.

I just picked up the HLT5075S for $956. (Same set with 720P instead of 1080) I watched the 720 and the 1080 from 6 feet away and couldn't see a difference - and couldn't resist that price.
