Need flat panel assistance...

I am concidering buying a plasma or LCD. I am interested in the 46"-50" range. I have tried reading reviews online but they are not consistant between sites. What is a good tv for the price and why? And any recommendations for where to purchase?

A couple questions:

1 - Budget?
2 - Do you have a preference between 720p and 1080p?
3 - What is the lighting like in your room? (Lots of windows may lend itself to LCD instead of plasma)

Re: Need flat panel assistance...

My budget... Obviously the lower the better but id like to try not to go much higher than $2000 unless there is a definate advantage to it. But i would really like it to be less. I am open minded though.

From what i have heard and read, am i really going to see a difference between 720 and 1080? But if the price is right 1080 is always good...:-)

The lighting is easily dimmed down with the window treatments. But its not a really bright room regardless.

Re: Need flat panel assistance...

Well i have been looking at alot of flat screens but am still unsure. I keep finding myself going back to the panasonic TH-50PX77U. How is that tv? anything else that would be a better buy in that price area? I am interested in 50". Also i have read that it doesnt have an issue with burn in with panasonics 10th gen technology. Is this true? Is it safe to play xbox360 on this tv? What about watching non HD channels? Thanks for the help. Oh yeah i was told that there are HD channels broadcasted for free with an HD anntena. Is that true and if so what anntena would you recommened? thanks again

I bought the previous generation Panasonic 50", the 50PX60U, when they were clearing them out this past spring, and the wife and I really like it. I think you'll be very happy the one you're looking at. I've also had a 42" Panasonic plasma for about two years set up in the bedroom, and it's been a good tv with no issues at all.

I don't know if burn in is a real problem anymore with most plasmas. I did have some image retention for a little while one day when I left up ESPN most of the day while the NFL draft was going on. However, once I switched channels it went away after a few hours. It was the result of a static display ESPN had on the left side of the screen, but like I said, it went away, and it was very faint to begin with. Based on that experience, I'd say you're not likely to have a problem with any permanent burn-in. I bought my first bigscreen HDTV back in late 1999, and people were posting on HTF asking about burn-in back then too. IMO, it's way overrated as a problem and it's not something I even worry about anymore.

As far as non-HD (Standard Def) channels, what you see will be result of the quality of the incoming signal. Comcast in my area is all digital, and the picture quality of the SD channels generally range from good to very good. I've been very happy with the quality and don't avoid the SD channels if there's something I want to see.

If you like the Panasonic, I say go for it. You can drive yourself nuts going back forth and trying to analyse every detail. Panasonic makes great plasma TVs and I think once you get it home and get it hooked up you'll be knocked out by it.

You really can't go wrong with that Panny 50". I've got the PX75U and couldn't be happier. The only difference is the 77U has the anti-glare coating.

I'm feeding it a HD signal from my Comcast box with a DVI>HDMI cable and the picture is simply stunning. SD material is OK but the only time that stuff is on is when my 2-yr-old is watching her programs. Football and the MLB playoffs are just awesome!

DVDs from my progressive scan Denon player blew away any low expectations I had. The salesman at CircuitCity tried to get me to bite on a cheap upconverting DVD player but I'd put my Denon up against any of them. I let the Faroudja in the Panny do all the scaling for me and it's pretty impressive in my opinion.

XBOX 360 connected via HDMI is a real treat too.

If you decide to go with it I'd recommend the following:

Calibrate the set. Get yourself a ceritfied ISF tech to do it, or if your so inclined use the Avia or DVE discs to do it yourself. The default picture (Vivid setting) runs really hot out of the box. OTOH switching to the Cinema mode came really close to my final calibration settings.

For the first 100 hours dial back the Contrast and Brightness settings to -10 and make sure to stretch any 4:3 content to fill the screen. This should help to avoid any IR or burn-in issues.

They've got a dedicated thread for these 2 sets at avsforum.com which were invaluable when I was researching the set and post-purchase.

Good luck.

Re: Need flat panel assistance...

I've had a Panasonic 50" plasma for 2 years. Love it. I'm going to upgrade to a 65" before too much longer. Plan on staying w/ Panasonic again.

Burn in has never been an issue. I suppose if you left a static image on screen for a day, you could get one.

Also, buy as much TV, and the best quality as you can afford. You won't regret it.
