Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
Which reciever do you have?This would probably help to determine which connections would work for you.As a side note i have the smaller version of your tv,i have the kdl-40s2000.I route everything thru my reciever that utilizes component.HDdvr/Dvd.Have toshiba a1 via HDMI direct to tv.Cant help you with the ps3 dont know how they connect.

Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
i dont know the model of my receiver, ill have to check that tonight when I get home. Its black and sony with 5.1 speakers, its a good 5-6 years old and has a blue light that lights up when surround sound is on... lol
anyway, I know ps3 has an HDMI connector, so Ill want to use that. But then sound will be going thru tv and not surround sound right? Same thing with HD satelite receiver... I want to hook them up with HDMI, but want sound to work thru surround sound and not tv...

Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
Here's how I would cable your setup:
Receiver -> TV, Component
Satellite Box -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
Satellite Box -> Receiver, Component
DVD -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
DVD -> Receiver, Component
PS3 -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
PS3 -> TV, HDMI
You'll definately want to invest in a Universal Remote such as a Logitech Harmony 880. Be aware that you won't have any audio capabilities via HDMI in this setup, as this would require an HDMI-capable receiver.
Personally, I don't find any real difference in picture quality between component and HDMI, but if this is a must have for you for you then you could consider purchasing an HDMI switch: http://www.gefen.com/kvm/htswitchers.jsp
As you can see, this would in fact require more cabling:
Receiver -> TV, Component
Satellite Box -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
Satellite Box -> HDMI Switch, HDMI
DVD -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
DVD -> Receiver, Component
PS3 -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
PS3 -> HDMI Switch, HDMI
HDMI Switch -> TV, HDMI

Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
In that case the cabling is very simple. No need for HDMI switching.
Receiver -> TV, Component
Satellite Box -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
Satellite Box -> Receiver, Component
PS3 -> Receiver, Digital Coax or Optical Audio
PS3 -> TV, HDMI
You'll still want a Universal Remote such as a Logitech Harmony 880. Enjoy!

Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
thanks, it sounds simple. So i need to get home and see exactly what receiver I have and what it has in the back. Looks like I need it to have 2 component inputs and 2 optical audio inputs right?
btw, whats advantage of that $150 remote over the one my satelite company gives me? I have that one setup now to work my dvd, tv, satelite and surround sound... granted i cant do EVERY button function on each device... but it powers on, plays, pauses, volume, etc...

Re: Bought HDTV, question about INSTALLATION
Well on a Logitech Harmony 880 you would have two functions:
1. Watch TV: Turns off PS3, turns on satellite, turns on receiver, sets receiver to correct video and audio inputs, turns on TV, sets TV to correct video input
2. Play PS3: Turns off satellite, turns on receiver, sets receiver to correct audio input, turns on TV, sets TV to correct video input
Try doing that on your satellite remote control, it's very difficult to control inputs on both your receiver and television.
