HELP!!Plasma vs LCD tv

Hi, We are looking to purchase a widescreen tv sometime next year and looking for some suggestions.

I have been reading numerous amount of information on both Plasma and LCD tv and most sites pretty much state the similar pros and cons. I understand that CURRENTLY, plasma consumes more power and generate more heat but provides better contrast ratio and colour and LCD generally provides higher resolution, low power consumption, more expensive, longer life, lower contrast ratio.

I have noticed recently that LCD tv are starting to provide higher contrast ratio (5000:1) and the price is starting to come down and the plasma seems to use less power and generates less heat. I believe their pros and cons will merge sometime soon.

My question is this:
Should I get an LCD if the contrast ratio improves (10,000:1)
OR
get a plasma if the power consumption and the heat generated by it goes down (we live in Australia and the summer here is not very pleasant with a heat generating tv in the house)

We mainly watch movies with lots of dark scenes (Angel, Lord of the Rings) but also watch bright coloured movies and tv shows (kids programme)

Any opinions will be appreciated.

Re: HELP!!Plasma vs LCD tv

A plasma display, though it does generate some heat, will not be something that toasts your house. The heat it does generate, however, requires good ventaltion....like most all HT equipment.

When I was deciding on what multi thousand dollar display to purchase, electrical usage was not of a prime concern....it was all about picture quality.

What size tv are you looking at? Once you get to a certain size LCD becomes very expensive and plasma will be a more affordable option. If you're staying around 47" or less then they are pretty competitive.

If you have alot of light coming in the room reflection off the glass screen of a plasma could be a concern. LCD panels reflect less light.

Re: HELP!!Plasma vs LCD tv

Thanks for the responses.

The size we will be looking at is around 42" as any bigger would be too big in our house. At the moment 32" LCD is around the same price as 42" plasma in Aus

We watch movies and tv shows during the day as well as night.
Would the reflection be annoyingly noticable during the day time?

My other question is would the contrast ratio on LCD be same as plasma if both have 5000:1 ?
