Choosing an HDTV?

Well, I'm hoping to blow some cash on a tv this year, and I'd like to do it right. I was looking at info a Samsung HL-S5087W 50" DLP, 1080p. I've liked most of the DLP tvs I've looked at, but I was leaning toward that one, partly because it appear sot be the smallest DLP I can get in 1080p. Only problem I see is the fact it lacks composite video inputs, which seems weird. I guess the right reciever will solve that problem anyway. My main concern is what's the right type of TV for me? I'd be watching a lot of DVDs, playing videogames, etc. I have just as much 1.33:1 content as I do widescreen, so I need a tv that won't be bothered by that sort of thing (no burn-in risk, etc). I probably won't be able to afford to go Blu-Ray or HD-DVD til sometime next year, but I definitely intend to. I also want something that will last if it's being watch like 12 hours a day. lol

I'm also wondering if there'll be any good deals on them closer to xmas. CC still has that 30 day price matching policy, right?

Re: Choosing an HDTV?

In doing casual reading yesterday on Yahoo (can't find the link now) I read where the discounting starts the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year. If you can wait till then you might save enough to get that HD-DVD player as well.
Burn-in should not be a problem with either DLP or RP LCD, even plasma has gotten better but the former two will give you more bang for your buck. As far as longevity, you will still have to replace the lamp in the DLP or RP LCD every couple years doing 12 hrs. a day.

Well, Plasma has no lamp to replace, right? When it's dead, it's dead, or so I've heard.

I figured on avoiding the rush and possible out-of-stock issues with other odd items I'll be needing (like cables, etc) and take care of everything a week or two before thanksgiving. Then if they drop the price before xmas, I can just go in with the receipt and get it matched, since CC does that 30 day thing (or they used to). Besides, I hate waiting. As for getting HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, I'd sort of prefer Blu-Ray but I'll go by whatever has the releases I want when I get the money. I need to set aside cash for an Xbox360 + Halo 3 before I buy either player though.

Hell, you sort of make out better if you buy first and get the price matched...

110% of the difference is better than just the sale price. Yes? hehehe

In that case the cheapest thing to do would be to get the HD-DVD add-on for the xbox360.

This is true, but if you keep this tv long enough to burn it out then it'll be time for you to move onto a new newer technology anyway. With normal viewing I would think any decent new plasma should last 10 years. When they first came out they had shorter lives, but that's pretty much a thing of the past.

You should add the Sony SXRD sets to your list of things to check out.

I sort of promissed myself I wouldn't buy an Xbox360 until there's a solid release date for Halo 3, because I was pissed about way Halo 2 left off (*cough* Matrix Reloaded, anyone? *cough*) and thought H3 should've been a launch title. Plus, what if Microsoft releases a model of the Xbox360 with the HD-DVD drive built in next year? That's another reason to hold off on buying one. I dunno.
