Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK plasma (EDTV)

Hello all,

I am possibly interested in This Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK ED plasma, but there are things about how this (or similar) EDTV's work that I dont understand.

First off, anyone own this model? or have a review? I searched on here but couldnt find anything.

Here is what I dont understand. since it doesnt display 1080i, if I use a HD source (like an HD cable box) what settings on the box would I set up? 480p or 1080i and the tv would scale it automatically down? Because from what Ive read, people say ED Panny plasmas have such good components inside that even hd sources look HD. But how is that possible if the box's settings are sopposed to be set at 480p. Am I not looking at this the right way? another thing that confused me is in the spec sheet it states this

"Scanning Format: 525 (480) / 60i-60p, 625 (575 / 50i-50p, 750 (720 / 60p-50p, 1125 (1080) / 60i-50i-24p-25p-30p-24sF----SMPTE 274M, 1250 (1080) /50i"

I guess I dont understand how the scaling vs. settings work. can anyone help me to better understand. I feel that if I knew this bit of info, it would be the missing information that would tip me to either buy an HD plasma or be happy with an ED one.

Thanks.

The panel will scale every incoming signal to its native rate (480p) Your cable box would output 1080i (or you could try 720p...whichever ended up looking best) and the panel would convert the signal. From a 7-10 foot viewing distance, many are hard pressed to tell the difference between an HD and ED unit displaying an HD source.
