Help me find a TV!

Hey guys and gals,

You are the most knowledgable on the net about TVs and the like, which is why I am turning to everyone here. What would be a good LCD monitor to get to be used as my HDTV and computer monitor at the same time? I'm looking in the sub $1000 range. I want a DVI input on it (for my PC), something that's widescreen, has component inputs, a good resolution (1280x768), a nice refresh rate, able to display HDTV (720p, 1080i) maybe around the 20" range'ish. You know, something good. This may sound like I'm asking everyone to do all the research for me, but I'm really not. I've been looking and looking around for a while now, but nothing really piques my interest. So, hopefully, you guys would know some stuff that I dont or have some recommendations. Anyone care to give me some ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am so weak on this type and size of display.

Those Dell's, not to many people ever get to see different sources on it before they buy....

May want to ask on a Dell owners forum even, as I'll bet some of them have gotten with their PC's and also used them for HD/DVD viewing as well.

Computer monitors look way great display'n DVD and HD sources though in my experiences in general.

So, if I had a 19" standard 4:3 monitor with a resolution of 1280x1024, would I be able to display HDTV on it?

Probably not in 16:9, so it may look funny. I really am weak on this. I'm surprised more people have not chimmed in...

I have seen a fair amount of people play DVD's on them though of course.


I actually have not heard of anybody displaying HD on them in all honesty. I'm sure it has been done, or attmepted by more than a few on these forums though.

Maybe HD on such HTPC's and/or computer displays is still not really happening?

I can say any native 16:9 computer display should be able to do it. But then how do those handle 4:3/non anamorphic material?


I really wish I knew more on the subject. I'm considered a high level as it gets computer guy afterall.

The specs on that display look pretty darn good and it has all the features you're after....IIRC, Dell has a 30 day trail exchange/refund so you really don't have anything to lose. You're sure not going to find a unit of that size under $1K in the HT arena. The specs actually look better than the LCD displays I purchased for my office a year or so ago and I'm quite satisfied with those for computer usage.
