Contrast ratio for plasma TV

Hi

I have seen contrast ratios range from 500:1 to 3000:1.
Besides native resolution, Does plasma picture quality increase with increasing contrast ratio.

In theory, it should...however, it's seems to largely be a numbers game much like wattage in a receiver.....who does the measuring and under what criteria. The new Panasonic advertises 4000:1 contrast ratio on their ED plasma and 3000:1 on the HD unit. Who knows? Though the spec sheets offer a starting point, your eyes are the final judge.

Agreed - the contrast numbers listed are about as accurate as watts in a receiver - inconsistent methodology. The higher contrast ratio should help provide deeper blacks. Generally the panny plasmas have the best blacks due to their better black level tech. Check out the plasma forum @ www.avsforum.com if you are really looking for more information on plasmas.

Add to that, each manufacturer measures the CR differently so there is no way to make any objective comparison.

When done correctly, a CRT tube set has something less than 200:1 ... and CRT's are acknowledged to have the best CR's of all the technologies out there.
