Best 4:3 HD for $1000?

A friend of mine is looking to spend $1000 for a 4:3 direct view HD (I know a 4:3 tv is not true HD...)

I have tried to convince him to go widescreen but he refuses...

Anyone have any ideas?

Why is a 4:3 TV not TRUE HD? As long as it is 1080i it should be the same, just has more unused area?

I made that statement because some 4:3 televisions do not take advantage of the resolution HD is capable of... Also, a true HD tv is 16:9 but manufactures are able to label them as HD (but this can be debated many ways...)

For a grand your friend can get a Front projector like an X1 and project any size he wants onto a wall, screen or whatever. The X1 isn't technically Hidef but it outputs a super image and an even better image when it is hi-def.

For the price, the X1 is a great bargain but the rainbow effect is pretty bad for many people. He also has an Xbox and Gamecube which the rainbow effect may be more pronounced. Also, if used as your primary video source, the cost of bulbs gets rather expensive.

The Sony HS510 is incredible. It has DVI (HDCP), and will accept 720 or 1080i. I have last years version, the 500 for sale in the hardware area. I really enjoy the set, but needed a shallower set.

Yes, some (well most) 4:3 TVs do not, but all 4:3 HDTVs will display the full resolution a 16:9 TV would, and thus it is true HD.

Zenith has a new 32" HD 4:3 direct-view with a built-in HD tuner for $999.

Nice set...can't remember the model number.

Better than paying $1200 for the Sony.
