If you have a region free drive already just get something like DVD Region Killer, that should be all you need AFAIK.

I don't think anyone here has a problem with region free players of any kind. Of course, you never can tell in the US these days, what with the DMCA and other asinine laws your politicos are passing.
Here's the URL for Region Killer if you didn't have it already.

Drive Region Info will tell you if your DVD-ROM drive has built in region coding (In that case, software won't help you, you'd need new firmware.), or if it has no built in region coding (Then the software should work fine.).
Find the Drive Region Info program at http://www.visualdomain.net and click on "Downloads".
When you use the program, insert a DVD first or it may give you incorrect data.

Good point. If you need to flash your DVD drive with new firmware, the best site is no doubt http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/

My drive says it has 3 changes left and then can never be changed again ... does this mean it can or can't be done using software (I'm using Intervideo WinDVD which came with my Dell) and it's an NEC DV 5800A drive I think!
what can I do that's simple & foolproof:b
Thanks,

Use DVDGenie. It works by detecting your DVD then giving you the option of which region to use. Genie then runs your normal player software but without the hardware region coming into play. Not the most elegant solution, but it works.
Alternativey, try and get a muilti-region firmware for the drive.

Oops, doesn't look like it does.
If TMPGEnc can put AC-3 support in a $60 app then surely one the bigger companies can without charging 400 frickin' dollars for it.

Go to EBay and buy yourself an older drive, pre 2000 manufacture date, they should be dirt cheap (my own 5 year old Toshiba is still going strong). Firmware/hardware region support did not kick in until year 2000.
