Sort of Off Topic: No longer able to skip forward in mpeg/wmv files.

Hi guys. I'm running XP Pro on a 2.4ghz Pentium. Plenty of memory to go round. QT files are still fine but suddenly I cannot skip forward on certain WMV and MPEG video files. By that I mean, say you are playing a 5 minute video file and want to click the bar at the bottom to the halfway point. Well, now I cannot do that. It won't move. WTF?!

This goes with the latest Winamp or Windows Media Player. However, I can use VLC on these files and skip around, though it's kind of sloppy.

Again, this is just on certain files and it is really annoying. I have no idea how to go about addressing this. HELP!

EDIT: Also, it looks like the color balance is off on all .mpg files. This is really frustrating.

Death to PG-13! And now death to DVNR too!!

I've had this problem also with certain files. I'm not sure what the problem is, but if you put your cursor at the end of the progress line, you can grab it and move it to another point of the video. That's what I have been doing.

Some WMV and MPG files are stream files. WMPlayer has big issues with program streams.

Hmmm, this is interesting:
Quote:
Why can't I fast forward, rewind, or seek in a WMV file?

You probably can’t perform these actions because the file isn't indexed. If you have access to the file and it isn't protected, you can quickly index the file yourself by using Windows Media File Editor, a utility that is available with Windows Media Encoder 9 Series.
To index a WMV file by using Windows Media File Editor, do the following:
1.
Open Windows Media File Editor.
2.
On the File menu, click Open, and then select the file you want to index.
3.
On the File menu, click Save and Index.
