I'm looking for a new 2.1 setup for my computer. While I have a great 5.1 setup in the living room, I listen to music almost exclusively while on my computer. I've considered studio monitors but I really don't know anything about them. I'm looking for speakers that would fit on a bookshelf and I would prefer that the amp reside in the speakers. Anyone have any recommendations?

I really like my NHT Pro model A-20s.

NHT Pro has been repackaged a few times, but its a solid product. For what you are asking, I'd go with:

NHT Pro Model M-00 and the sonically matching Model S-00.

The 20's are still available, too. They look a little different than mine, but information is available Here. (Mine were called "A-20", and the fronts are angled in. I shelled out a grand for them half-price.)

Before I bought my Pros, I did listen to a number of other monitors, including Behringer and Mackie. Behringer sucked. The Mackies were good, but my preference was for the Pros. And when I found the Pros for half off, I had to jump. Look for free shipping if you end up buying online...the amp alone for my A-20s weighs about 50 pounds.

What kind of budget are you looking at? If you can swing it, Genelec has some incredible monitors you could get. I think they start around $450 or $500 for a pair and go upwards of $4k-5k.

Buying top of the line from computer speaker manufacturers can give quite satisfying results as well.

Logitechs best 2.1 setup is the Z-2300 and that should sound pretty good for $150.

Klispch has the ProMedia 2.1. These might have the edge when it comes to the upper frequency range as they have a separate tweeter on the satellites.

Not studio monitors, but sound like a viable option in this case.
