Arrows on XP Icons

I just got a new computer at work and I am setting it up. All the icons for personal folders or files have a double arrow on the bottom left hand corner of them. These files are stored on a personal drive on the network, not locally on the computer. I didn't have these on the old computer, but it was running Win2000. I know that a single arrow designates that it is a shortcut and can be removed with Powertoys. These double arrows are similar in size and location. What does these arrows designate? Can I get rid of them and how?

Re: Arrows on XP Icons

A double arrow like that usually refers to "offline files" which generates local copies of those locations for use if the network is inaccessible. Normally this is used with laptops, but the setting is on by default.
  • Save and close any documents in those locations you might have open.
  • Open up an explorer window. (I.e. My Computer)
  • Choose Tools>Folder Options
  • Switch to the Offline Files tab and remove the check under "Enable offline files'
You might get a warning that files are in use. As long as you have saved and exited all your applications you'll be fine.

No, you're a genius 'cause you can't make a lamp.
What do you know about trigonometry?
I could care less about trigonometry.
Did you know without trigonometry there would be no engineering?
Without lamps there'd be no light.
