Why so many removable devices suddenly showing up in MY COMPUTER?
Shortly before my recent format of my computer, I noticed
the addition of about 4 additional removable devices that were
not associated with my computer.
Usually, I have my C & D drive, E & F dvd drives, G media card
reader, H & I external drives.
In addition to all those I suddenly have removable drives J, K, L, M
that do not exist.
I thought perhaps I installed some software that malfunctioned.
After I formatted my computer recently, all those non-existent
drives showed up once again.
What is causing this? How can I remove them, and, if I
accidentally remove a drive that SHOULD be there will Windows
reinstall it automatically on the next boot-up?
As always, I appreciate the help.

Hmm, my computer also has four unexpected drive letters, but that was my USB2 based card reader. It took up four different letters, and different card types were on different letters.

That's what my multi-format card reader did too.

Re: Why so many removable devices suddenly showing up in MY COMPUTER?
Try this: in the Control Panel, open up Administrative Tools, and in there, open Computer Management. In the tree on the left, under Storage, is Disk Management; select it. On the bottom half of the right are your physical drives. You should see the hard disk, the optical drives, and maybe your "extra" drives. It should give some indication of what those drives are. For example, my DVD drive says "CD-ROM 0 DVD ( E: )". If you right-click on that, you can choose Properties. At the bottom of the General page, there's Device usage, and there, you can disable the devices if they don't make sense or you don't use them.

Yep, same here. When I unplug the reader, the drives/letters go away (of course).
high resolution ipod featuring dlp hd programming is the best, almost as good as playstation 2 with wega windows media on a super cd! ps2 and tivo do dolby tv with broadband hdtv!

Re: Why so many removable devices suddenly showing up in MY COMPUTER?
Mmmmm.....
You know, I would readily accept that all these extra
devices are related to my multiple card/floppy reader except
for the fact that up until recently, windows never showed
them as separate devices.
My card reader is built into computer so I can't unplug.
When I get home later today I'll check device manager.

Re: Why so many removable devices suddenly showing up in MY COMPUTER?
Keep in mind that other devices, like printers & other multi-function devices (all-in-one printer/fax/copier) often have built-in card readers. In addition, digital cameras, iPods, etc. can show up as removable drives. If you didn't install any devices or new software recently but they suddenly showed up it could be that a new device driver, software or firmware version has upgraded the funtionality of any of your devices and they now show as removable storage. Your OS and the software for your devices often have auto-update features that could explain the update even if you didn't manually update anything.
Just possibilities to consider...

And then when I feel so stuffed I can't eat anymore, I just use the restroom! And then I CAN eat more!
