LCD Monitor is blurry

My LCD monitor is blurry, but only in some spots. This used to be a temporary problem; it would go back to normal by itself. One time, I clicked the settings button on the monitor to change settings, and it went back to normal. What is the most likely problem? The LCD itself (less than 2 years old, but "no name" - MAG Innovision, purchased at Best Buy) or the video card (more than 5 years old)?

If it's a digital connection from your gfx card to the monitor (i.e. DVI), then it's the monitor.

It's a VGA connection.

Hm, then it's not so clear cut, but I still think it's the monitor. Do you have a different cable you can try or a different computer that you can hook up?

Most LCD's have an "auto sync" button to make it match its settings to the VGA signal. Try that.

Re: LCD Monitor is blurry

Glad that did it. I assumed that would have happened while you played with the settings anyway, but luckily Kimmo didn't .

I did play with the settings, but I overlooked the Auto function which I had never used before and didn't know what it did. Thanks for your help!

Re: LCD Monitor is blurry

It got blurry again, so I messed around with the refresh rate. It was at 75Hz, now it's at 60Hz and seems to be stable. Is a lower rate better for LCDs?

Re: LCD Monitor is blurry

Yeah, 75 Hz is for CRTs, which have flicker problems at high brightness levels but can be scanned at arbitrarily hgih rates. 60 Hz is good for LCDs, which have a fixed response time but no flicker.

Re: LCD Monitor is blurry

I was about to suggest the refresh rate as well. My old Samsung 17" LCD wanted the refresh rate at 60Hz, or I would have bands of blurriness. My new19" widescreen Gateway wants it at 75Hz, or the same blurriness.
